U.S. Route 62

U.S. Route 62 or U.S. Highway 62 (US 62) runs from the US-Mexico border at El Paso, Texas, to Niagara Falls, New York, near the United States-Canada border. It is the only east-west United States Numbered Highway that connects Mexico and Canada.

Parts of US 62 follow what once was the Ozark Trail, including the historic bridge across the South Canadian River in Newcastle, Oklahoma (the first structure built with federal highway funds in Oklahoma). This bridge was damaged beyond repair by the 2013 Moore tornado that struck Newcastle and Moore, Oklahoma.

Route description

West Texas

US 62 has two separate segments in Texas, separated by a portion in New Mexico with the first section in Texas from its terminus in El Paso to the state line in the Guadalupe Mountains. Through El Paso, US 62 begins at the Santa Fe Street Bridge, and follows Santa Fe Street, then Paisano Drive. At the Paisano Drive underpass for I-10 (I-10 exit 23B), US 62 runs concurrently with US 180, while US 180 ends its concurrency with I-10. The route then follows Montana Avenue, continuing the concurrency with US 180 until Seminole. Before exiting Texas, the route passes through the Salt Flats of Texas, the southern base of Guadalupe Peak, the highest point in Texas, and Guadalupe Mountains National Park.

West Virginia Route 62

West Virginia Route 62 is a north–south state highway in western West Virginia. The southern terminus of the route is at West Virginia Route 25 in Dunbar. The northern terminus is at Interstate 77 and U.S. Route 33 in Ripley.

History

In the 1920s, WV 62 was designated West Virginia Route 19.

Up until the late 1960s, WV 62 was designated as U.S. Route 35 from Dunbar to Point Pleasant, crossing the Silver Bridge into Gallipolis, Ohio. After the Silver Bridge collapsed in 1967 (necessitating the building of a new bridge, the Silver Memorial Bridge—finished in 1969), US 35 was moved to the south bank (replacing the former WV 17) of the Kanawha River and US 35's previous route was designated as WV 62.

In December 2003, WV 62 was extended northward (but geographically southeastward) along then-US 33 from its former northern terminus at US 33 in Mason to Ripley.

West Virginia Route Spur 62

WV Spur 62 connects WV 62 to Ohio State Route 833 via the Pomeroy–Mason Bridge.As of September 2007, Spur 62 is signposted as part of Ohio State Route 833.

Virginia State Route 62

State Route 62 (SR 62) is a primary state highway in the U.S. state of Virginia. Known as Milton Highway, the state highway runs 4.01 miles (6.45 km) from the North Carolina state line, where North Carolina Highway 62 (NC 62) continues into Milton, north to U.S. Route 58 and US 360 east of Danville. SR 62 was assigned as a number upgrade of SR 726 to connect US 58 with NC 62 in 1946.

Route description

SR 62 begins at the North Carolina state line in the extreme southwestern corner of Halifax County. The roadway continues southeast as NC 62, which immediately crosses the Dan River into the town of Milton, where NC 62 turns south toward Burlington at its intersection with NC 57. Milton is just south of Virginia International Raceway, which lies on the east side of the Dan River. SR 62 almost immediately enters southeastern Pittsylvania County and remains in the county for the remainder of the route. It heads northwest through farmland to an intersection with US 58 and US 360 (Philpott Road) about 8 miles (13 km) east of downtown Danville. The roadway continues north as SR 726 (Ringgold Depot Road), which heads northwest toward Ringgold Depot.

U.S. Route 202

U.S. Route 202 (US 202) is a highway stretching from Delaware to Maine, also passing through the states of Pennsylvania, New Jersey, New York, Connecticut, Massachusetts, and New Hampshire. Its parent route, U.S. Route 2, only goes through three of these same states: New York, New Hampshire, and Maine.

The road has borne the number 202 since at least 1936. Before this, sections of the road were designated U.S. Route 122, as it intersected U.S. Route 22. Its current designation is based on its intersection with US 2 in Maine.

This route is considerably longer than the eastern segment of US 2, making it one of several 3-digit US routes to be longer than their parent routes.

Route description

Delaware

US 202 begins at an interchange with US 13/US 40 south of Wilmington. It runs north along the same road as Delaware Route 141, then joins with Interstate 95 through Wilmington. North of the city, it exits the freeway onto Concord Pike, heading north; Delaware Route 202 also continues south from this point. US 202 continues north towards the state line as a six-lane arterial road and is lined with numerous strip malls and "big-box stores".

U.S. Route 66

U.S. Route 66 (US 66 or Route 66), also known as the Will Rogers Highway and colloquially known as the Main Street of America or the Mother Road, was one of the original highways within the U.S. Highway System. Route 66 was established on November 11, 1926, with road signs erected the following year. The highway, which became one of the most famous roads in America, originally ran from Chicago, Illinois, through Missouri, Kansas, Oklahoma, Texas, New Mexico, and Arizona before ending at Santa Monica, California, covering a total of 2,448 miles (3,940 km). It was recognized in popular culture by both the hit song "(Get Your Kicks on) Route 66" and the Route 66 television show in the 1960s.

Route 66 served as a major path for those who migrated west, especially during the Dust Bowl of the 1930s, and it supported the economies of the communities through which the road passed. People doing business along the route became prosperous due to the growing popularity of the highway, and those same people later fought to keep the highway alive in the face of the growing threat of being bypassed by the new Interstate Highway System.

U.S. Route 69

U.S. Route 69 is a north–south United States highway. When it was first created, it was only 150 miles (241 km) long, but it has since been expanded into a Minnesota to Texas cross-country route. The highway's southern terminus (as well as those of US 287 and US 96) is in Port Arthur, Texas at an intersection with State Highway 87. Its northern terminus is in Albert Lea, Minnesota at Minnesota State Highway 13.

Texas

US 69 begins at its southern terminus with SH 87 in Port Arthur. This intersection is also the southern terminus for US 96 and US 287, which are concurrent with US 69. US 69, US 96, and US 287 continue in a northwest, then west, route until its intersection with Interstate 10 in southern Beaumont. At this intersection, US 69, US 96, and US 287 merge with I-10. I-10/US 69/US 96/US 287 continue in a northerly direction through Beaumont for several miles. Just after the intersection with US 90, I-10 splits from the multiplex and resumes its easterly course, leaving US 69, US 96, and US 287 heading northwest through Beaumont. US 69 north of I-10 is also known officially known as Eastex Freeway, and is an official evacuation route, just as Interstate 69/US 59 heading north from Houston is known as Eastex Freeway as well.
