U.S. Route 24

U.S. Route 24 (US 24) is one of the original United States highways of 1926. It originally ran from Pontiac, Michigan, in the east to Kansas City, Missouri, in the west. Today, the highway's eastern terminus is in Independence Township, Michigan, at an intersection with I-75 and its western terminus is near Minturn, Colorado at an intersection with I-70. The transition from north–south to east–west signage is in Toledo, Ohio.

Route description

Colorado

In Colorado, US 24 runs from Interstate 70 (and implicitly with, U.S. Route 6) from Minturn where it goes through Minturn and continues south to the Continental Divide at Tennessee Pass. It continues south to Johnson Village and then joins with U.S. Route 285 northbound to the Trout Creek Pass. After the pass, US 24 separates from US 285 and continues east to Colorado Springs and then northeast to Limon, where US 24 joins I-70 for most of the rest of its routing to the Kansas state line.

When the United States Highway System was started in 1926, US 24 in Colorado was designated U.S. Route 40S. It began in Grand Junction and went east along the current Interstate 70 corridor to Minturn, from which it follows the current route to Limon. From Limon east to the Kansas border, the current US 24 was designated U.S. Route 40N. US 40S west of Limon and US 40N east of Limon received the US 24 designation in 1936, when US 24 was extended west from Kansas City, Missouri. The segment between Grand Junction and Minturn was decommissioned in 1975.

U.S. Route 24 in Illinois

U.S. Route 24 (US 24) in the U.S. state of Illinois is a major arterial road that runs from the Missouri state line at the Mississippi River in Quincy to Sheldon. This is a distance of 255.13 miles (410.59 km).

Route description

Quincy to Peoria

From Quincy to Peoria, the US 24 route follows the old Peoria to Quincy stage coach route.

The US 24 crossing into Illinois from Missouri over the Mississippi River consists of two bridges; westbound traffic uses the newer Bayview Bridge, while eastbound traffic uses the Quincy Memorial Bridge. At the eastern end of the Quincy Memorial Bridge, eastbound US 24 overlaps Illinois Route 57 (IL 57) northbound (4th Street) for two blocks before IL 57 ends at IL 104 (Broadway); westbound US 24 turns off onto the bridge at the northern terminus of IL 57. US 24 continues north at IL 104 and serves only the northwestern portion of Quincy.

US 24 overlaps IL 96 briefly before running due east. It has a full interchange with the northern terminus of Interstate 172 (I-172) ; as of 2006, IL 336 continues northbound of I-172.

U.S. Route 24 in Indiana

U.S. Route 24 (US 24) In Indiana, US 24 runs east from the Illinois state line to Huntington. At Huntington, US 24 turns northeast and runs to Fort Wayne; it then overlaps Interstate 69 (I-69) and Interstate 469 (I-469) to bypass the city before entering Ohio at the state line east of Fort Wayne. The segment of US 24 between Logansport and Toledo, Ohio is part of the Hoosier Heartland Industrial Corridor project of the Intermodal Surface Transportation Efficiency Act.

Illinois to Logansport

This western section of US 24 is mostly rural two-lane. US 24 enters Indiana from Illinois concurrenct with U.S. Route 52 (US 52). US 24 and US 52 heads east towards Kentland, passing through an intersection with State Road 71 (SR 71). In Kentland US 24 and US 52 have an intersection with U.S. Route 41 (US 41) where US 52 turns south. US 24 heads east from Kentland towards Remington, passing through a concurrency with State Road 55. Then in Remington US 24 starts a concurrency with U.S. Route 231. US 24 and US 231 heads east towards Wolcott, passing through an interchange with Interstate 65 (I-65). In Wolcott US 231 heads south and US 24 heads east towards Reynolds. In Reynolds US 24 has an intersection with State Road 43 (SR 43) and starts a concurrency with U.S. Route 421 (US 421). US 24 and US 421 heads east towards Monticello. In Monticello US 421 head south with State Road 39 (SR 39), US 24 now has a concurrency with SR 39. US 24 and SR 39 heads east from Monticello, east of Monticello SR 39 heads north. US 24 heads east towards Logansport, passing through Idaville, Burnettsville, and Lake Cicott.

U.S. Route 24 in Colorado

U.S. Route 24 (US 24) is a major east–west route in the U.S. state of Colorado.

Route description

US 24 traverses the Rocky Mountains, starting near Minturn. It then continues east for about 30 miles to Leadville, where it turns south and goes to Buena Vista where it becomes concurrent with US 285. It continues with Highway 285 to the small community of Antero Junction. After that, it spends its time as a mountainous two-lane highway until it gets to the town of Divide, where it meets SH 67 and becomes a 4 lane highway. These highways overlap to Woodland Park. From there it passes through Crystola, Green Mountain Falls, and Cascade. Through Manitou Springs and Colorado Springs, where the road is known as Midland Expressway. Just east of Interstate 25, it is known as the Martin Luther King Jr Bypass. From Colorado Springs it continues northeast through several towns such as Falcon, Peyton, the city of Calhan, Ramah, Simla, and Matheson. When US 24 reaches Limon, it junctions with I-70/US 40/US 287/SH 71. It continues east (parallel to I-70) to Burlington where it joins I-70 to the Kansas state line.
