USS Rainier

USS Rainier has been the name of more than one United States Navy ship, and may refer to:

  • USS Rainier (1917), a schooner in commission as a patrol vessel from 1917 to 1919
  • USS Rainier (AE-5), an ammunition ship in commission from 1941 to 1946 and from 1951 to 1970
  • USS Rainier (AOE-7), a fast combat support ship commissioned in 1995, decommissioned in 2003, and transferred to the Military Sealift Command as USNS Rainier (T-AOE-7).
  • USNS Rainier (T-AOE-7)

The third US Navy vessel named after Mount Rainier, USNS Rainier is the second ship in the Supply class of fast combat support ships. On September 28, 1991, the ship's sponsor - Mrs. Suzanne Callison Dicks, wife of The Honorable Norm Dicks - christened 'AOE-7' as Rainier. Rainier was commissioned on January 21, 1995 at Bremerton, Washington - Captain Thomas P. Danaher, USN, commanding.

Rainier has the speed to keep up with the carrier strike groups. She rapidly replenishes Navy task forces. She receives petroleum products, ammunition and stores from shuttle ships and redistributes these items simultaneously to carrier strike group ships. This reduces the vulnerability of serviced ships by reducing alongside time.

In April 2013, it was announced that the Military Sealift Command will take Rainier and her sister USNS Bridge out of service in 2014 as a cost-saving measure. This has been delayed and Rainer will stay in service for one year. She will be held in reserve.

    USS Rainier (AE-5)

USS Rainier (AE-5), the second US Navy vessel named after Mount Rainier, was laid down on 14 May 1940 by the Tampa Shipbuilding Co., Tampa, Fla., as Rainbow (MC hull 124); launched 1 March 1941; sponsored by Mrs. Robert E. Anderson; transferred to the US Navy on 16 April 1941; converted for use as an ammunition auxiliary; and commissioned as Rainier (AE-5) on 21 December 1941 at Norfolk, Va., Capt. William W. Meek in command.

    World War II

After a 6-week shakedown in Cuban waters, Rainier transited the Panama Canal and reported to Commander, Service Force, Pacific Fleet. Between February and May 1942, she made two ammunition runs from Port Chicago, Calif., to Pearl Harbor, whence, on 10 May, she steamed for Tongatapu. There, through the battles of the Coral Sea and Midway, she offloaded her cargo for transfer to shore depots and issued ammunition to Allied ships, particularly task forces 18, 15, and 16.

At the end of July, she shifted to the Fijis to supply ships preparing for Operation Watchtower, the assault on the Solomons. Then, on 5 August, she continued on to Noumea, New Caledonia, where she remained through the initial phases of the Guadalcanal campaign.
