USS Napa

USS Napa may refer to:

USS Napa (AT-32), originally Yucca, was a Bagaduce-class fleet tug of the United States Navy. The ship was laid down as Napa on 5 March 1919, at the Puget Sound Naval Shipyard, Washington; launched on 24 July 1919; and commissioned on 5 December 1919, Lt. W. R. Giddens in command.

Service history

1919–1929

Following shakedown and an abbreviated tour on the West Coast, the oceangoing tug sailed to Guam, where she served as a station ship from June 1919 until the spring of 1929. She then steamed to the Philippines, where she decommissioned on 7 June 1929, and joined the Inactive Fleet, berthed at Olongapo.

World War II, 1939–1942

Ordered reactivated as war in Asia loomed closer, Napa recommissioned at Cavite on 15 August 1939, joined the Asiatic Fleet and for the next two years performed the services demanded of her type.

In late 1941, when the possibility of war became a probability for the near future, the under-shipped and undermanned fleet assigned to defend and support the Philippines began to improve its defenses. Napa, under the command of Lieutenant Minter Dial (USNA, 1932), was assigned to net laying and maintenance activities in Mariveles and Manila Bays. Without previous training or experience and without the proper equipment, the crew of 40 men (down from the 60 men the ship was originally designed to hold in active duty), including 8 Filipinos, on the Napa, aided by 16th Naval District service craft, and, at times, by various available minesweepers, gunboats, and Army craft, improvised with what they had.

USS Napa (1864)

USS Napa was a Casco class twin-screw light draft monitor built during the American Civil War for operation in the shallow inland waters of the Confederacy. These warships sacrificed armor plate for a shallow draft and were fitted with a ballast compartment designed to lower them in the water during battle.

Construction

The single-turreted Napa was built by the Harlan & Hollingsworth Co., Wilmington, DE, and launched 26 November 1864. Though the original designs for the Casco-class monitors were drawn by John Ericsson, the final revision was created by Chief Engineer Alban B. Stimers following Rear Admiral Samuel F. Du Pont's failed bombardment of Fort Sumter in 1863. By the time that the plans were put before the Monitor Board in New York City, Ericsson and Stimers had a poor relationship, and Chief of the Bureau of Construction and Repair John Lenthall had little connection to the board. This resulted in the plans being approved and 20 vessels ordered without serious scrutiny of the new design. $14 million US was allocated for the construction of these vessels. It was discovered that Stimers had failed to compensate for the armor his revisions added to the original plan and this resulted in excessive stress on the wooden hull frames and a freeboard of only 3 inches (76 mm). Stimers was removed from the control of the project and Ericsson was called in to undo the damage. He was forced to raise the hulls of the monitors under construction by nearly two feet and the first few completed vessels had their turrets removed and a single pivot-mount 11 inch Dahlgren cannon mounted. These same few vessels had a retractable spar torpedo added as well.

USS Diachenko (APD-123)

USS Diachenko (APD-123), ex-USS Alex Diachenko, ex-DE-690, later LPR-123, was a Crosley-class high speed transport in commission from 1944 to 1959 and from 1961 to 1969. She served in the United States Navy during World War II, the Cold War, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War.

Construction and commissioning

Diachenko was laid down as Rudderow class destroyer escort Alex Diachenko (DE-690) by the Bethlehem Steel Company in Quincy, Massachusetts. She was redesignated as a Crosley-class high-speed transport while under construction. She was launched on 15 August 1944, and commissioned as USS Alex Diachenko (APD-123) on 8 December 1944.

World War II

Alex Diachenko entered service in the final year of World War II, and was assigned to the Asiatic-Pacific Theater. She sailed from Norfolk, Virginia, Virginia, on 31 January 1945, stopping at San Diego, Pearl Harbor, Eniwetok, and Ulithi—being renamed USS Diachenko on 1 March 1945 while on her voyage—before arriving at Leyte on 21 March. She transported troops during the reoccupation of the Philippines. She landed soldiers at Legaspi, Philippines on 1 April and Police Harbor on 17 April. She arrived at Morotai, Indonesia on 7 May and transported Australian soldiers for the upcoming invasion at Brunei Bay, Borneo. She returned to Morotai, and on 26 June she set sail to land troops in the assault of Balikpapan, Indonesia on 1 July.
