USS Burrows (DD-29)

USS Burrows (DD-29) was a modified Paulding-class destroyer in the United States Navy during World War I and later in the United States Coast Guard, designated (CG-10). She was the second ship named for Lieutenant William Ward Burrows II.

Burrows was launched on 23 June 1910 by New York Shipbuilding Company, Camden, New Jersey, sponsored by Miss Lorna Dorthea Burrows, a relative of Lieutenant Burrows, and commissioned on 21 February 1911, with Lieutenant Julius F. Hellweg in command.

United States Navy

Prior to World War I, Burrows was attached to the Torpedo Flotilla, Atlantic Fleet, and operated along the east coast and in Cuban waters, performing tactical maneuvers, war games, torpedo practice, and gunnery. Early in 1916, Burrows was assigned to the Neutrality Patrol in the Staten Island–Long Island area of New York. When the United States entered World War I, Burrows patrolled the Lower Harbor, New York. On 7 April 1917, she reported to Commander, Squadron 2, Patrol Force, and carried out an unfruitful search for a German raider reported in the vicinity of Nantucket, Massachusetts. On 10 April, she was detached from Squadron 2 and reported to Philadelphia Navy Yard, where she was fitted out for distant service.

USS Burrows (DE-105)

USS Burrows (DE-105) was a Cannon-class destroyer escort built for the U.S. Navy during World War II. She served in both the Atlantic Ocean and the Pacific Ocean, and provided escort service against submarine and air attack for Navy vessels and convoys.

She was laid down at Wilmington, Delaware, on 24 March 1943 by the Dravo Corporation; launched on 2 October 1943; sponsored by Miss Ruth C. Tech; and commissioned on 19 December 1943 at the Philadelphia Navy Yard, Lt. Comdr. Robert W. Graham in command.

World War II North Atlantic operations

The destroyer escort left Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, on 30 December 1943 for shakedown training off Bermuda and returned to Philadelphia on 9 February 1944 for post-shakedown repairs before steaming to Norfolk, Virginia, for duty as a training ship for prospective destroyer escort crews. After less than three weeks, she received orders to New York City to await assignment to her first convoy.

On 27 February, the warship sailed for the first of 16 transatlantic crossings. In company with Marblehead, Milwaukee, four destroyers, and seven other destroyer escorts, Burrows sailed through the cold and stormy North Atlantic and arrived safely in Belfast, Northern Ireland. She proceeded to NOB Londonderry to join Escort Division 28 (CortDiv22); and, on 17 March, Burrows began her return voyage to New York. Upon arriving there on 28 March, she entered the navy yard for an overhaul.

Burrows

Burrows is a provincial electoral division in the Canadian province of Manitoba. It was created by redistribution in 1957, and formally came into existence in the provincial election of 1958. The riding is located in the northern part of Winnipeg.

Burrows is named after Theodore Arthur Burrows, who served as Lieutenant-Governor of Manitoba from 1926 to 1929. It is bordered to the east by St. Johns and Point Douglas, to the south by Wellington, to the north by Kildonan and The Maples, and to the west by Inkster. The riding's boundaries were significantly redrawn in 1999, taking in a considerable amount of territory which was previously a part of Inkster.

The riding's population in 1996 was 18,718. In 1999, the average family income was $35,575, one of the lowest rates in the province. Thirty-nine per cent of the riding's residents are listed as low-income, with an unemployment rate of 13%. One household in four has only one parent. Nineteen per cent of the riding's residents are over sixty-five years of age.
