Tyrol (/tɪˈroʊl, taɪ-, ˈtaɪroʊl/; German: Tirol, pronounced [tiˈʀoːl]; Italian: Tirolo, pronounced [tiˈrɔːlo]) is a federal state (Bundesland) in western Austria. It comprises the Austrian part of the historical Princely County of Tyrol, as well as the present-day Euroregion Tyrol–South Tyrol–Trentino. The capital of Tyrol is Innsbruck.

Geography

The state of Tyrol is separated into two parts, divided by a 20-kilometre wide (12 mi) strip that is known as the Alpine divide. The larger territory is called North Tyrol (Nordtirol) and the smaller area South-East Tyrol (Osttirol). The neighbouring Austrian state of Salzburg borders the Italian province of South Tyrol which was part of the Tyrol prior to the First World War. With a land area of 12,683.85 km² (4,897.26 sq mi), it is the third largest state in Austria.

North Tyrol shares its borders with the federal state of Salzburg in the east and Vorarlberg in the west. In the north, it adjoins to the German state of Bavaria; in the south, Italian South Tyrol (Trentino-Alto Adige/Südtirol region) as well as the Swiss canton of Graubünden. East Tyrol also shares its borders with the federal state of Carinthia to the east and the Italian Province of Belluno (Veneto) to the south.

History of Tyrol

The history of Tyrol, an historical region in the middle alpine area of Central Europe, dates back to early human settlements at the end of the last glacier period, around 12,000 BC. Sedentary settlements of farmers and herders can be traced back to 5000 BC. Many of the main and side valleys were settled during the early Bronze Age, from 1800 to 1300 BC. From these settlements, two prominent cultures emerged: the Laugen-Melaun culture in the Bronze Age, and the Fritzens-Sanzeno culture in the Iron Age.

The region was conquered by the Romans in 15 BC. The northern and eastern areas were incorporated into the Roman Empire as the provinces of Raetia and Noricum, leaving deep impressions on the culture and language, with the Rhaeto-Romance languages. Following the conquest of Italy by the Goths, Tyrol became part of the Ostrogothic Kingdom in the fifth and sixth centuries. In 553, southern Tyrol was incorporated into the Lombards' Kingdom of Italy, northern Tyrol came under the influence of the Bavarii, and western Tyrol became part of Alamannia—the three areas meeting at present-day Bolzano.
