Try (Nelly Furtado song)

"Try" is a song by Canadian singer-songwriter Nelly Furtado, taken from her second studio album, Folklore (2003). The song, written by Furtado herself, and Brian West, was released as the second single from the album in February 2004.

Lyrically, Furtado said the song "is about the reality of love. My energy used to just go everywhere, but now I'm more grounded because I've found true love. The idea here is that, yeah, sometimes life sucks. But life is only so long, and somebody can come along who makes you want to be a better person. You just have to roll with the punches. So "Try" is not a happy-go-lucky song. It has a strange arrangement because the chorus happens only twice, and the end is improvisational. It's like one of those epic power ballads." The Los Angeles Times said of "Try", "Her unfettered enthusiasm wins out as she sings of passion for life".

Commercial release

Although the single was a big success in countries such as Mexico and Portugal (where it peaked at number one), it did not chart in the United States. "Try" was the last single released from Folklore in the U.S.; the subsequent singles were released only in Canada, Europe and Latin America. Two versions of the song exist; the original with the chorus only occurring twice, and a radio edit version in which the improv is taken out at the end and an extra chorus is added. A Spanish version, "Dar", was released in 2007 in the album of Loose (Summer Edition) only available in Latin America.

Try (The Killing)

"Try" is the thirty-fourth episode of the American television drama series The Killing, which aired on July 14, 2013. The episode is written by Nic Sheff and Aaron Slavick; directed by Lodge Kerrigan. In the episode, Pastor Mike (Ben Cotton) kidnaps Sarah Linden (Mireille Enos). Stephen Holder (Joel Kinnaman) and the police must listen to the Linden/Pastor conversation via her two-way radio, which she has activated unbeknownst to Pastor Mike. Ray Seward (Peter Sarsgaard) panics as his execution is two days away. Bullet (Bex Taylor-Klaus) roams the streets looking for Lyric (Julia Sarah Stone) and learns about Angie Gower (Laine MacNeil).

Plot

In Linden's car, Pastor Mike, holding a knife to her throat, takes her phone and gun then orders her to drive around. She secretly turns on her police radio and tries to talk him down.

At the police station, Bullet tells Holder that Lyric called and that Mike is taking Lyric to the woods where he killed the other girls. Holder relays the news to Skinner (Elias Koteas), who's reluctant to take action. When Holder vouches for his informant, Skinner pulls half the officers searching trains for Mike and redirects them to the woods around the pond. Holder hears Linden's voice over an open radio channel and realizes she's being held hostage. Skinner redirects all resources to find Linden's car. All officers in the room listen intently as Linden talks to Pastor Mike.

Try (Pink song)

"Try" is a song recorded by American singer songwriter Pink, which she released as the second single from her sixth studio album, The Truth About Love (2012). Written and composed by Michael Busbee and Ben West and produced by Greg Kurstin, it is a pop rock ballad about taking risks with love, no matter what consequences may result.

"Try" received mostly positive reviews from music critics who noted that it is one of the standout tracks on the album and called it a hit. Commercially, the song was a success, reaching number one in Spain and the top-10 in Australia, Austria, Canada, Germany, Italy, New Zealand, Poland, Switzerland, the United Kingdom and the United States, while reaching the top-20 in most countries. The Floria Sigismondi-directed video features shots of a paint-covered Pink and her male counterpart expressing their frustrations through contemporary dance.

Background and release

Pink confirmed she was writing lyrics and composing music for her then untitled sixth album, which she titled The Truth About Love when she eventually released it, in February 2012. An early version of the album's lead single, a song called "Blow Me (One Last Kiss)," was leaked online on July 1, 2012, resulting in the single being released a week earlier than planned. Rachel Raczka from The Boston Globe noted that "Try," the second single from The Truth About Love, also leaked in September 2012. The song was originally sung by GoNorthToGoSouth, a band fronted by Ben West and Michael Busbee. Pink's version of the song premiered on radio on September 6, 2012. "Try" was amongst one of five lyrics videos that Pink uploaded on 12 September, along with album tracks "Slut Like You," "Just Give Me a Reason" featuring Nate Ruess from fun., "How Come You're Not Here," and "Are We All We Are." Critics have pointed out the similarities between the artwork of "Try" and that of Kylie Minogue's 2007 album X, for the latter of which they have expressed their preference.

Rock (geology)

In geology, rock or stone is a naturally occurring solid aggregate of one or more minerals or mineraloids. For example, the common rock granite is a combination of the quartz, feldspar and biotite minerals. The Earth's outer solid layer, the lithosphere, is made of rock.

Rocks have been used by mankind throughout history. From the Stone Age, rocks have been used for tools. The minerals and metals found in rocks have been essential to human civilization.

Three major groups of rocks are defined: igneous, sedimentary, and metamorphic. The scientific study of rocks is called petrology, which is an essential component of geology.

Classification

At a granular level, rocks are composed of grains of minerals, which, in turn, are homogeneous solids formed from a chemical compound that is arranged in an orderly manner. The aggregate minerals forming the rock are held together by chemical bonds. The types and abundance of minerals in a rock are determined by the manner in which the rock was formed. Many rocks contain silica (SiO₂); a compound of silicon and oxygen that forms 74.3% of the Earth's crust. This material forms crystals with other compounds in the rock. The proportion of silica in rocks and minerals is a major factor in determining their name and properties.

Stone (1751 Kent cricketer)

Stone (first name and dates unknown) was an English cricketer who played in major cricket matches for Kent in 1751.

Career

Stone played in two major matches in 1751 for Kent against the All-England Eleven. On 20 and 21 May, he was a member of the Kent team that lost by 9 runs at the Artillery Ground. A return match was arranged at the same venue on 22 May and All-England won by an innings and 9 runs, with Stone again a member of the Kent team.

Stone was also named in two single wicket "fives" matches that were held on 3 and 5 June at the Artillery Ground. In both games, he played for Kent against Surrey, Kent winning each time.

Stone is only recorded on those four occasions and it is not known if he played regularly in earlier and later seasons. Players were rarely mentioned by name in contemporary reports and there are no other known references to Stone.

Stone (TV series)

Stone is an American police drama that aired on ABC on Monday nights between January 14 and March 17, 1980. The series was a Stephen J. Cannell Productions in association with Gerry Productions, Inc. and Universal Television (it was Cannell's last series before he went independent) and was created by Cannell, Richard Levinson and William Link.

Premise

The series focused on Det Sgt. Daniel Stone, a police officer who wrote best selling novels on police work based on his own experiences. His superior Chief Paulton, his one time mentor, was unhappy with Stone's writing but was unable to stop him. The role of Det. Buck Rogers was played by series star Dennis Weaver's son Robby Weaver.
