Troy Transit Center

Troy Transit Center is an Amtrak station in Troy, Michigan served by the Wolverine. This station replaced Birmingham Amtrak station on October 14, 2014, and is located about 1200 feet southwest on Doyle Drive in Troy, Michigan.

Description

The Troy Transit Center brings together the services of Amtrak, Suburban Mobility Authority for Regional Transportation (SMART) buses and taxis. Designed by local architectural firm Neumann/Smith, the one story, 2,000 square foot brick building includes a waiting room and restrooms; large expanses of glass allow natural light to flood the interior. A pedestrian bridge over the tracks allows access to the western platform and protects passengers from inclement weather.

History

In 2000, Grand Sakwa Properties gave the city of Troy title to 77 acres, 2.7 of which would be donated with the provision that funding for a transit center be secured within 10 years. In 2011, the cities of Birmingham and Troy were awarded a federal grant to assist in replacing the existing station with a new, multimodal transit center across the tracks in Troy. However, the mayor of Troy rejected the funding on ideological grounds, thus terminating the project. The $6.6 million project was resurrected by a subsequent Troy city administration, and broke ground on November 27, 2012, and was completed in October 2013. A legal dispute over title to the land kept the center from opening. In late September 2014, a settlement by Troy to acquire the land and lease the site to Amtrak was reached, and the station opened on October 14, 2014.

Troy is a trilogy of radio plays, first broadcast on BBC Radio 3 from 28 November to 30 November 1998. The cast is led by Paul Scofield, who came out of retirement to take part. Troy was written by Andrew Rissik and produced by Jeremy Mortimer. The trilogy is a companion piece to King Priam, Rissik's earlier more optimistic take on the story in which Scofield took the title role.

The three parts of Troy are

  • King Priam and His Sons
  • The Death of Achilles
  • Helen at Ephesus
  • Troy was repeated the year following its first transmission and has been broadcast on BBC Radio 7 every year from 2004 to 2009 and on its successor channel BBC Radio 4 Extra in 2012. It has also been broadcast in other countries, for example by ABC Classic FM in 1999 and 2000.

    Cast

    Episodes

Troy consists of three 90-minute plays.

    King Priam and His Sons

The first episode starts with the events around Paris's birth, the prophecies that he would bring about the destruction of Troy and King Priam's decision to have him exposed on Mount Ida. It continues with his decision to leave his foster-father Anacreon and lover Oenone to go to Troy to plead for the return of a bull that is being taken there for sacrifice and Priam's subsequent recognition and acceptance of him as his son. It concludes with Paris's elopement with Helen from Sparta and Priam's decision to support the two lovers rather than return Helen to her husband Menalaus and his consequent acceptance of the war with the Greeks.

  • Alabama (schooner)

Alabama is a Gloucester fishing schooner that was built in 1926 and served as the pilot boat for Mobile, Alabama. The Alabama's home port is Vineyard Haven Harbor, Martha's Vineyard, Massachusetts. The Alabama is owned by The Black Dog Tall Ships, along with the Shenandoah, and offers cruises of Nantucket Sound.

    History

The schooner Alabama was one of the last vessels built from the design of one of the most notable designers of Gloucester Fishing Schooners, Thomas F. McManus. Commissioned by the Mobile Bar Pilot Association of Mobile, Alabama, the vessel was built in Pensacola, Florida, launched in 1926, and originally called Alabamian until her predecessor the Bar Pilot Association's original Alabama was retired. Though the hull bore strong resemblance of McMannus' famous Gloucester fishing schooner designs, it served as a pilot boat stationed on the Mobile Bar until 1966.

In 1967 the schooner was bought by Captain Robert S. Douglas, master and designer of the Shenandoah, and moved to Vineyard Haven. There she sat on a mooring with minimal necessary upkeep until 1994. In the early nineties with a dwindling market for windjammer cruises which leave out most modern amenities kids became the new direction for the Coastwise Packet Company - the original name for what is now also The Black Dog Tall Ships. Because of the success of these "Kids Cruises" on board the Shenandoah, Alabama was to be rebuilt by the Five Corners Shipbuilding Company headed by Gary Maynard a former First Mate that sailed on the Shenandoah. Most of the work was done in Vineyard Haven with the vessel afloat on her mooring using Captain Douglas' own power tools and shop space. Any other work was done in Fairhaven, Massachusetts at D.N. Kelly's Shipyard.

    Alabama River

The Alabama River, in the U.S. state of Alabama, is formed by the Tallapoosa and Coosa rivers, which unite about 6 miles (10 km) north of Montgomery.

The river flows west to Selma, then southwest until, about 45 miles (72 km) from Mobile, it unites with the Tombigbee, forming the Mobile and Tensaw rivers, which discharge into Mobile Bay.

    Description

The course of the Alabama is very meandering. Its width varies from 50 to 200 yards (46 to 183 m), and its depth from 3 to 40 feet (1 to 12 m). Its length as measured by the United States Geological Survey is 318.5 miles (512.6 km), and by steamboat measurement, 420 miles (680 km).

The river crosses the richest agricultural and timber districts of the state. Railways connect it with the mineral regions of north-central Alabama.

After the Coosa and Tallapoosa rivers, the principal tributary of the Alabama is the Cahaba River, which is about 194 miles (312 km) long and joins the Alabama River about 10 miles (16 km) below Selma. The Alabama River's main tributary, the Coosa River, crosses the mineral region of Alabama and is navigable for light-draft boats from Rome, Georgia, to about 117 miles (188 km) above Wetumpka (about 102 miles (164 km) below Rome and 26 miles (42 km) below Greensport), and from Wetumpka to its junction with the Tallapoosa. The channel of the river has been considerably improved by the federal government.
