Andy C

Andrew Clarke, known by his stage name Andy C, is an English DJ and producer and co-founder of RAM Records. He is considered a pioneering force in the drum and bass genre. In 2011 Andy C won the Best DJ title in the 2011 Drum and Bass Arena Awards, and since the awards' inception in 2009, he has won the people's vote in the awards for Best DJ each year. He specialises in fast mixing, often employing three turntables. A signature mixing style of Andy is what he refers to as "The Double Drop": lining up 2 tunes so that both basslines drop at the same time. Andy C has often organised events where he DJs continuously for 6 hours. In January 2011 Mixmag UK announced the result of 14 month global poll from 35 nominations chosen by other big names in dance music: the survey asked global voters to decide Who is the Greatest DJ of All Time Andy C was ranked number 4 on it and the highest British DJ on the list.

Music career

Early years

Andy C was a DJ in his own right but gained a strong reputation and more bookings off the back of the hugely successful "Valley of The Shadows" track, an early drum and bass track that walked the line perfectly between hardcore and drum and bass just as the genres were starting to split. The track, created and released by Origin Unknown (made up of Andy C and Ant Miles)—often referred to as "31 Seconds" or "Long Dark Tunnel" because of the samples it incorporates—made use of a heavy bassline, bell samples and a rolling drum track to produce a popular, easy to recognise track that was easy to mix and became a favourite in dance floors at raves across the UK and beyond. The track was released as an EP in 1993 and has been remixed and re-released several times, and is widely recognised as one of the most influential drum and bass tunes of the early 90s. His signature look (Andy C is rarely seen without a baseball cap) and energetic movement behind the decks when playing make him a recognisable figure.

Hiwa Abdul Rahman Rashul

Hiwa Abdul Rahman Rashul, nicknamed Triple-X by his American guards, was the first ghost detainee to be publicly acknowledged by American authorities.

Captured by Kurdish forces in Iraq in June or July 2003, he was turned over to the CIA who believed he was a member of Ansar al-Islam. He was then moved to a CIA prison in Afghanistan.

Office of Legal Counsel representative Jack L. Goldsmith informed Alberto R. Gonzales in October 2003 that Rashul was legally protected under the 4th Geneva Convention, and must legally be returned to Iraq.

On June 16, 2004 Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld acknowledged that he had ordered Rashul to be imprisoned without record, at the request of DCI George Tenet.

Rashul was nicknamed "Triple-X" because, since he was kept off the books, his guards never learned his real name. When some of the circumstance of his incarceration became public, it was suggested that the reason he had been secretly incarcerated for seven months, without being interrogated, was that he got lost. Because of the order to keep him off the books those who would have interrogated him forgot about him, or could not find him.

WXXX

WXXX (95.5 FM, "95 Triple X") is a U.S. radio station based in Colchester, Vermont, and licensed in South Burlington. On air and in advertisements the station is known as "95 Triple X." The primary format of the station is Top 40.

History

From the 1950s into the 1970s the 1310am WXXX call sign was licensed in Hattiesburg, Mississippi.

On November 16, 1984, WXXX (95 Triple-X) signed on-the-air. Its first song was Start Me Up (The Rolling Stones). WXXX signed-on at 3 kW on 95.3FM. At that time it was owned by several well-known Vermont Broadcasters such as Howard Ginsberg, John Hughes and John Nichols. They sold the station in 1986 to a Boston-based company. It was subsequently sold again to Atlantic Ventures, another Boston-based company. After that it was purchased by the owners of WVMT(AM) in Burlington. In the early 1990s WXXX upgraded their signal and moved to 95.5 FM. Although the station is licensed to South Burlington, the stations offices and studios are located in Colchester along with co-owned WVMT. This radio station was the birthplace of many radio careers like John Brooks, Lana Wilder, Jon "Jag" Gray, Jonathan Channell, Mike Czarny, Michael Maze, Artie the One Man Party, Matthew "LA" Reid, Michael Mann, Troy Shannon, Keith Rice, John "Lucas" Grinnell, Scott Osbourne, Jeff Thomas, Lisa B, Josh "JB Goode" Goodman, Dena Yasner, Ken Benson, Rob Dawes, Skip Church, Walt Speck, Joe Taylor and Rob Poulin.
