Travis (chimpanzee)

Travis (October 21, 1995 – February 16, 2009) was a male common chimpanzee (Pan troglodytes) who appeared in American television shows and commercials. In February 2009, Travis and his owner Sandra Herold gained international notoriety after he suddenly attacked Herold's friend Charla Nash and grievously mauled her, blinding her while severing her nose, ears, and both hands, and severely lacerating her face. He was subsequently shot dead on the arrival of the police, after trying to attack an officer.

As an animal actor, Travis had appeared in several television commercials, including spots for Coca-Cola and Old Navy. He had also appeared on The Maury Povich Show, The Man Show, and a television pilot that featured Sheryl Crow and Michael Moore.

Socialization

Travis was born near Festus, Missouri on October 21, 1995, at Mike and Connie Braun Casey's compound, currently named the Missouri Chimpanzee Sanctuary. In a separate incident, Travis' mother Suzy was shot and killed following an escape in 2001. Sandra and Jerome Herold adopted Travis when he was three days old. They raised him at their home at Rock Rimmon Road in the North Stamford section of Stamford, Connecticut. Travis was the Herolds' constant companion and would often accompany them to work and when they went shopping in town. The Herolds owned a towing company, and Travis would pose for photos at the shop and ride with the tow truck, his seatbelt buckled and wearing a baseball shirt. Travis became well known in the town and had been known to greet police officers they would encounter when towing cars.

Travis (band)

Travis are a Scottish rock band formed in Glasgow in 1990, comprising Fran Healy (lead vocals, rhythm guitar), Dougie Payne (bass guitar, backing vocals), Andy Dunlop (lead guitar, banjo, backing vocals) and Neil Primrose (drums, percussion).

The band has released 8 studio albums: Good Feeling (1997), The Man Who (1999), The Invisible Band (2001), 12 Memories (2003), The Boy With No Name (2007), Ode To J. Smith (2008), Where You Stand (2013) and Everything At Once (2016).

Travis have twice been awarded best band at the BRIT Awards, and are often credited for having paved the way for bands such as Coldplay and Keane (Coldplay's Chris Martin has called himself "a poor man's Fran Healy", while saying that Travis "invented" Coldplay "and lots of others"). The band named themselves after the Harry Dean Stanton character Travis Henderson from the film Paris, Texas.

Alexander (1803 Liverpool)

Alexander was launched in 1803 at Liverpool, but contracted to the Honourable East India Company, which took her measurements in 1804, and which rated her as an East Indiaman of "600 tons". She made seven trips for the Company before she was sold; during her service she was variously referred to as an "extra" ship, one that the Company chartered for particular voyages, and as a "regular' ship, i.e., one that the Company held on long-term contract. When she sailed during wartime she sailed under letters of marque, which authorised her to use her armaments offensively against enemy, i.e., French vessels, and not just defensively. She was sold in 1817.

Voyage #1 (1804-05)

Captain John Robinson Francklin was issued a letter of marque on 30 May 1804. He sailed her for Bengal, leaving Portsmouth on 10 July. She reached Funchal on 23 July, and Diamond Harbour on 3 December. On her return leg she reached Saugor in the Hooghly river on 13 January 1805. On 2 February she left there, reaching Madras ten days later. By 20 June she was at St Helena, and by 15 September she had returned to Long Reach. East Indiaman traditionally stopped here to lighten their loads before sailing up the Thames to moorings at Blackwall.

Alexander (son of Lysimachus)

Alexander (Greek: Ἀλέξανδρος, flourished 3rd century BC) was a son of the diadochus, the Greek nobleman who was a Macedonian Thessalian Lysimachus by an Odrysian concubine called Macris.

Following the murder of his paternal half-brother Agathocles by the command of his father in 284 BC, he fled into Asia with his brother's widow Lysandra, and solicited the aid of Seleucus I Nicator. As a consequence, war ensued between Seleucus I and Lysimachus, ending in the defeat and death of the latter, who was slain in battle in 281 BC, in the plain of Corius in Phrygia. Alexander conveyed his father's body to Lysimachia, to be buried in a tomb between Cardia and Pactya, where it still stood in the time of Pausanias, four centuries later.
