Tram

A tram (also known as tramcar; and in North America known as streetcar, trolley or trolley car) is a rail vehicle which runs on tracks along public urban streets (called street running), and also sometimes on a segregated right of way. The lines or networks operated by tramcars are called tramways. Tramways powered by electricity, the most common type historically, were once called electric street railways. However, trams were widely used in urban areas before the universal adoption of electrification; other methods of powering trams are listed below under "History".

Tram lines may also run between cities and/or towns (for example, interurbans, tram-train), and/or partially grade-separated even in the cities (light rail). Very occasionally, trams also carry freight. Tram vehicles are usually lighter and shorter than conventional trains and rapid transit trains, but the size of trams (particularly light rail vehicles) is rapidly increasing. Some trams (for instance tram-trains) may also run on ordinary railway tracks, a tramway may be upgraded to a light rail or a rapid transit line, two urban tramways may be connected to an interurban, etc. For all these reasons, the differences between the various modes of rail transportation are often indistinct. In the United States, the term tram has sometimes been used for rubber-tired trackless trains, which are not related to the other vehicles covered in this article.

Tramlijn 5 (Amsterdam)

Tramlijn 5 is a tram route in the capital of the Netherlands, Amsterdam. The route runs between the centre of Amsterdam and the town of Amstelveen, and is operated by the municipal transport company GVB. The line has twenty-seven stops with an average journey time of forty minutes end-to-end.

Tramlijn 5—aside from being one of two rapid transit routes to serve Amstelveen; the other being the Amsterdam Metro—also connects several important areas of the city, including the Zuidas financial district, Leidseplein and Dam Square. This makes it one of the city's busiest tram lines in service. It also has the distinction of having the most litter of any of GVB's tram lines, and also the most animals taken on board.

Infrastructure

Tramlijn 5 operates on a combination of street running and segregated tram- or tram-and-bus-only highways from its northern terminus at Amsterdam Centraal railway station to just south of Amsterdam Zuid railway station. From Amsterdam Zuid, tramlijn 5 shares a segregated tramway with sneltram 51 of the Amsterdam Metro to a point just before its southern terminus in Amstelveen town centre.

Mount Everest

Mount Everest, also known in Nepal as Sagarmāthā and in Tibet as Chomolungma, is Earth's highest mountain. It is located in the Mahalangur mountain range in Nepal and Tibet. Its peak is 8,848 metres (29,029 ft) above sea level. It is not the furthest summit from the centre of the Earth. That honour goes to Mount Chimborazo, in the Andes. The international border between China (Tibet Autonomous Region) and Nepal runs across Everest's precise summit point. Its massif includes neighbouring peaks Lhotse, 8,516 m (27,940 ft); Nuptse, 7,855 m (25,771 ft) and Changtse, 7,580 m (24,870 ft).

In 1856, the Great Trigonometrical Survey of India established the first published height of Everest, then known as Peak XV, at 8,840 m (29,002 ft). The current official height of 8,848 m (29,029 ft) as recognised by China and Nepal was established by a 1955 Indian survey and subsequently confirmed by a Chinese survey in 1975. In 1865, Everest was given its official English name by the Royal Geographical Society upon a recommendation by Andrew Waugh, the British Surveyor General of India. Waugh named the mountain after his predecessor in the post, Sir George Everest, arguing that there were many local names, against the opinion of Everest.

Everest (Indian TV series)

Everest is a Hindi language Indian telenovela which began airing on STAR Plus on 3 November 2014. Directed by Glenn Baretto and Ankush Mohla and touted as "the most ambitious project on Indian television", Everest was created by Ashutosh Gowariker and produced by Ashutosh Gowariker Productions Private Limited (AGPPL). The music of the telenovela, which is Gowariker's television debut as a producer, was composed by A. R. Rahman. Everest is also the television debut of A. R. Rahman as a music composer and was shot in its entirety in India and Nepal. The shooting locations included Everest Base Camp (in Nepal) and the Dokriani Glacier (in India), which are located at a height of 17,590 feet (5,360 m) and 12,000 feet (3,700 m) above sea level, respectively.

Plot summary

This is the story of a group of people who enter Nehru Institute of Mountaineering, Uttarkashi for training before attempting to climb Mount Everest. Anjali Singh Rawat, who felt neglected by her father Brigadier Jagat Singh Rawat, wants to win her father's love by fulfilling his dream of climbing Mount Everest with the help of her mother, Sarita Rawat and best friend, Maithili. Aakash Joshi, a videographer, used to live with Gaurav and his mother Shikha Maa until Gaurav was killed by an accident and Aakash thinks that he is responsible for his best friend's death. He is supposed to make a documentary on Arjun Sabharwal's expedition. Arjun Sabharwal grew up in an orphanage and was a thief, before becoming India's best mountaineer. His next expedition is to Mount Everest.

Everest (1998 film)

Everest is a 70mm American documentary film, from MacGillivray Freeman Films, about the struggles involved in climbing Mount Everest, the highest mountain peak on Earth, located in the Himalayan region of Nepal. It was released to IMAX theaters in March 1998 and became the highest-grossing film made in the IMAX format.

Production

The 45-minute documentary is narrated by Irish actor Liam Neeson and was filmed entirely in IMAX. It includes a vivid description of the training required in order to climb the 29,028 feet to the summit of Mount Everest and the challenges faced during the ascent, such as avalanches, blizzards, and oxygen deprivation. The film centers on a team led by Ed Viesturs and Everest director David Breashears; among their number are a Spanish female climber, named Araceli Segarra, and Jamling Tenzing Norgay, son of the pioneering Sherpa mountaineer Tenzing Norgay.

Everest was in production at the mountain during the 1996 Mount Everest disaster, in which another group of mountain climbers became trapped by a blizzard near the summit. The film includes footage of these events, as the IMAX team assist Beck Weathers and other survivors. Producer and co-director Greg MacGillivray later said that while editing the documentary for release, he and Breashears decided to focus more on the tragedy, due to the popularity of Jon Krakauer's book about the 1996 disaster, Into Thin Air (1997). MacGillivray reasoned: "Ten million people have read that book, so we had to address the issue. And I think it strengthened the film."
