Tower Hill is an elevated spot northwest of the Tower of London, in the London Borough of Tower Hamlets, just outside the City of London boundary.

It was formerly an extra-parochial area known as Great Tower Hill. Historically it was the site of countless public executions and today it is notable for being the site of the Tower Hill Memorial.

The area is served by Tower Gateway DLR station and Tower Hill tube station. A road named Tower Hill forms a short stretch of the A3211 route between Byward Street in the west and a junction with Minories and Tower Hill Terrace in the east.

History

Settlement

One of the oldest parts of London, archaeological evidence shows that there was a settlement on the hill in the Bronze Age and much later a Roman village that was burnt down during the Boudica uprising. A nearby church, All Hallows-by-the-Tower, is known for fragments of Romanesque architecture dating back to AD 680; the church itself dates from 675.

Tower Hill (volcano)

Tower Hill is an inactive volcano on the south-West coast of Victoria, Australia. Within the crater, the explosion also formed a series of small cones (known as scoria cones) and spheres surrounded by a crater lake.Tower Hill volcano is roughly 4 km wide and 80 m high. It has a gradient altering between 10% to 80% at the higher points.

The Koroitgundidj people long inhabited this region of Australia and have lived in the area of Tower Hill since before recorded history. The first confirmed sighting of Tower Hill by Europeans was by French explorers sailing with Captain Baudin aboard Géographe in 1802. Matthew Flinders sailed east along the southern coast of Australia and on 20 April 1802 in the ship's log referred to "Peaked Hill Position uncertain", which may refer to Tower Hill.

The Hill was painted by the artist Eugene von Guerard in 1855, who was the foremost landscape artist in the colonies at the time. The painting is now in the Warnambool art gallery.

Now part of the state park system as the Tower Hill State Game Reserve, it previously saw service as a pasture for stock animals, fields for crop growing, a stone quarrying, an unofficial motorcycle racing venue, a source of free timber, and a convenient community rubbish dump. By the middle of the last century the hills were almost completely denuded and virtually the only wildlife to be found were waterfowl that came to the crater lakes. The area has been reforested with native flora, and repopulated with native fauna over the past 40 years.

Tower Hill is an affluent neighborhood in central Freetown, Sierra Leone; located just outside the central business district in downtown Freetown. Tower Hill is the seat of government of Sierra Leone, as it is home to the State House, Sierra Leone House of Parliament, the Sierra Leone Ministry of Defence and National Security building, the Bank of Sierra Leone building, The Sierra Leone National Electoral Commission (NEC) building, and several other government buildings.

Tower Hill (Staten Island Railway station)

Tower Hill is a station on the abandoned North Shore Branch of the Staten Island Railway, located in Tower Hill between the Port Richmond and Elm Park neighborhoods. The station lies between Treadwell and Sharpe Avenues about 3.4 miles (5.5 km) from the Saint George terminal, with two tracks and an island platform.

History

The station opened on February 23, 1886. Formerly a surface station, it and the Port Richmond station one stop east were elevated onto the current concrete trestle in 1935 as part of an SIRT grade crossing elimination project, opening as an elevated station on February 25, 1937. West of the station past Nicholas Avenue, the line recedes into an open-cut. Tower Hill station closed on March 31, 1953, along with the South Beach Branch and the rest of the North Shore Branch. It is one of the few stations along the North Shore line still standing, although in ruins.

Similar to the nearby Port Richmond Station, the station has a concrete island platform with a metal canopy and street staircases at both ends of the platform. The westernmost exit is at Treadwell Avenue. The easternmost exit is just east of Sharpe Avenue on private property, leading to an empty lot on Grove Avenue.

Tower Hill School is a private college preparatory school in Wilmington, Delaware, offering instruction for pre-school through 12th grade.

History

Tower Hill was founded in 1919. The school is a member of the Delaware Independent School Conference and fields 23 competitive varsity sports.

The school offered US$1,900,000 a year of need-based financial aid to 21% of its students for the 2013-2014 school year.

Elizabeth “Bessie” Cromwell Speers has been selected to be headmaster of the school starting the 2015-2016 school year.

Recognition

The Wall Street Journal ranked Tower Hill 24th in the nation and 1st in Delaware, in percentage of students attending eight top colleges.
