Toto (dessert)

Toto (also referred to as tuoto and toe-toe bulla) is a small coconut cake in Jamaican cuisine. served as a snack or dessert. The cake is typically prepared with shredded coconut, brown sugar, flour, baking soda and powder and coconut milk.

History

It was stated in the book Jamaican food: history, biology, culture, published in 2008, that the food appears to be have been invented in the twentieth century, and that by the end of the twentieth century they were difficult to find. That claim might be erroneous as the food is typically made in homes and not sold widely in stores. Toto recipes are passed down within families, some claiming to have recipes from the 19th Century. toto is not related to and should not be confused with Coco Bread.

Etymology

The word "dessert" originated from the French word desservir, meaning "to clear the table." Its first known use was in 1600, in a health education manual entitled Naturall and artificial Directions for Health, which was written by William Vaughan. In his A History of Dessert (2013), Michael Krondl explains it refers to the fact dessert was served after the table had been cleared of other dishes. The term dates from the 14th century but attained its current meaning around the beginning of the 20th century when "service à la française" (setting a variety of dishes on the table at the same time) was replaced with "service à la russe" (presenting a meal in courses.)"

Dessert (magazine)

Dessert (デザート, Dezāto) is a Japanese shōjo manga magazine published by Kodansha. It began as a new shojo magazine in 1996 after the demise of Shōjo Friend. The series that were still ongoing in Shōjo Friend were then moved to Dessert or The Dessert. The magazine's main sales targets are girls in their late teens, and women in their early twenties.

Toto!: The Wonderful Adventure

ToTo!: The Wonderful Adventure (トト! The Wonderful Adventure) is a Japanese manga series which first appeared in Weekly Shōnen Magazine in March 2003. The series has gone to be published by various manga publishing houses. The series is a manga parody of the Wizard of Oz. It is a comedy /adventure /swashbuckler type story, with a young rambunctious teenage boy named Kakashi adventuring / exploring his world with his friends.

The series is licensed for an English language release in North America by Del Rey Manga, which began releasing the individual volumes in May 2008.

Plot

Kakashi is a young islander who has always dreamed of leaving his island and exploring the world; A world radically changed because of the world war from 50 years ago. His father, a famous world traveler leaves him alone at home in their Light House. After a brief period of time, Kakashi receives his father's journal which prompts him to travel the world like his father, whom many people say is dead.

Toto (gorilla)

Toto (1931–1968) (a.k.a. M'Toto meaning "Little Child" in Swahili) was a gorilla that was adopted and raised very much like a human child.

A. Maria Hoyt adopted the baby female gorilla orphaned by a hunt in French Equatorial Africa in 1931. Mrs. Hoyt's husband killed the baby gorilla's father for a museum piece, and his guides killed its mother for fun. Mrs. Hoyt moved to Cuba to provide a more tropical home for Toto. At the age of four or five, Toto adopted a kitten named Principe, carrying the kitten with her everywhere. When Toto became too difficult to manage for a private keeper, she was leased to the Ringling Brothers and Barnum and Bailey Circus as a potential mate for another gorilla, Gargantua, a.k.a. Buddy. Toto died in 1968. Toto is buried at "Sandy Lane" Kennels Pet Cemetery in Sarasota, Florida.
