Tony Wilson

Anthony Howard "Tony" Wilson (20 February 1950 – 10 August 2007) was an English record label owner, radio and television presenter, nightclub manager, impresario and journalist for Granada Television and the BBC.

Wilson was the music mogul behind some of Manchester's most successful bands. He was one of the five co-founders of Factory Records and the founder and manager of the Haçienda nightclub. Wilson was known as "Mr Manchester", dubbed as such for his work in promoting the culture of Manchester throughout his career.

He was portrayed by Steve Coogan in Michael Winterbottom's 2002 film 24 Hour Party People, and by Craig Parkinson in Anton Corbijn's 2007 film Control.

Early life

Wilson was born 20 February 1950 in Hope Hospital, Pendleton, Salford, Lancashire, to Sydney Wilson and Doris Knupfer, and moved to Marple, near Stockport in Cheshire, at the age of five. His maternal grandfather was German. After passing his Eleven plus exam, Wilson attended the De La Salle Grammar School in Weaste Lane, Pendleton, Salford. He developed a love of literature and language, ignited by a performance of Hamlet at Stratford upon Avon. Wilson started his professional career in 1968 at the age of 17, working as an English and Drama teacher at Blue Coat School in Oldham. He later graduated with a degree in English from Jesus College, Cambridge.

Brigadier Sir Mathew John Anthony "Tony" Wilson, 6th Baronet of Eshton Hall,OBE, MC (born 2 October 1935) is a former British Army officer who commanded the 5th Infantry Brigade during the Falklands War.

Military career

Educated at the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst, Wilson was commissioned into the King’s Own Yorkshire Light Infantry (KOYLI) on his 21st birthday on 2 October 1956, and thus represented the fourth consecutive generation of his family to serve with the regiment. Over the next few years he took part in military operations in Aden, Borneo, Malaya, Cyprus and Northern Ireland.

In 1967 he was promoted to major and was appointed a Member of the Order of the British Empire (Military Division) in 1971. Shortly afterwards, in May 1972, he received the Military Cross "for Gallant Services" in Ulster (Northern Ireland).

Promotion to lieutenant colonel followed in 1973 and after a further engagement in Ulster and a posting to Hong Kong, his honorary title was upgraded in an Officer of the Order of the British Empire (Military Division).

Tony Wilson (boxer)

Tony Wilson (born 25 April 1964) is a British former boxer who represented the UK at the 1984 Summer Olympics and in his professional career was British light heavyweight champion between 1987 and 1989.

Career

Born in Wolverhampton in 1964, Wilson had a successful career as an amateur, winning two ABA titles and representing the UK at the 1984 Summer Olympics, where he reached the quarter finals.

Wilson started his professional career in February 1985, working with trainer Jimmy Tibbs and promoter Frank Warren, with a fourth round stoppage of Blaine Logsdon at the Royal Albert Hall. He won all nine of his fights in 1985 and 1986 including a sixth round stoppage of Simon Harris, whose jaw was broken by Wilson. His first fight of 1987 was a final eliminator for the British light heavyweight title against Keith Bristol, which resulted in Wilson stopping him in the first round. He suffered his first defeat in May when he was stopped in the second round by American Jesse Shelby.

Tony Wilson (radio presenter)

Tony Wilson is a Melbourne-based Australian radio and television personality, successful writer and prominent speaker. He gained notoriety as the winner of the second series of the ABC television show, Race Around the World, in 1998, and has since become somewhat of a cult figure in Melbourne radio, television and print media.

Prior to gaining attention in Australian media, he was drafted as a tall forward by the Hawthorn Football Club and intended embarking on a career as an AFL footballer, but was cut after less than one season partly due to chronic injury.

Some time after becoming the second (and final) winner of Race Around the World, he joined the 3RRR Breakfasters, a radio panel show which had formerly featured personalities John Safran, Dave O'Neil and Kate Langbroek. He remained on the panel for six years before finishing to pursue his writing.

Since 'Race Around the World', he has had television stints on Channel 7s 'The Late Report' (1999), ABCTV's 'The Einstein Factor' (2004–8) and the Working Dog /SBS World Cup comedy program, 'Santo Sam and Ed's Cup Fever' (2010).
