Anthony Eric "Tony" James (born 12 April 1953, Shepherds Bush, London, England) is an English musician, best known as the bassist for Generation X and Sigue Sigue Sputnik.

Career

He was originally a member of the punk band London SS, along with Brian James (later of The Damned), and Mick Jones plus Terry Chimes (both future members of The Clash).

Later, James joined the early punk band Chelsea. The group included Billy Idol (then William Broad) on the guitar, John Towe on drums and Gene October on vocals. Soon they left October to form Generation X (named after a 1960s paperback novel, by Jane Deverson, not to be confused with the 1990s book by Douglas Coupland), a British punk band of the late 1970s. Idol switched from guitar to vocal duties, and Bob "Derwood" Andrews joined as lead guitarist after leaving the Fulham band Paradox. Generation X played their first concert on 14 December 1976 at The Roxy (becoming the first band to play at the venue).

Anthony Craig "Tony" James was an English football player. He played as a centre back for Gainsborough Trinity, Lincoln City, Leicester City, Hereford United and Plymouth Argyle.

He is best remembered at Leicester as being the player who scored the goal that kept Leicester from dropping into the 3rd tier of English football for the first time, after his 24th minute close range conversion from a corner saw Leicester beat Oxford United 1-0 to climb out of the relegation on the final day of the 1990-91 season, which ultimately saw the start of the club's upturn in form in the 1990s. He was also awarded the club's Player of the Year award in the same season. However a broken leg in a game against Wolverhampton Wanderers in October 1991 and several injuries afterwards halted his progression and he never really claimed an extended run in the Leicester side after that.

Anthony James (born 9 October 1978) is a retired Welsh footballer who last played as a centre-back for English club Hereford.

Career

Born in Cwmbran, James started his professional career at Hereford United having failed to win a professional contract at West Bromwich Albion where he played in the reserves.

He soon established himself as a first choice centre back, partnering Hereford captain Ian Wright. He was voted Player of the Year for the 2002–03 and 2003–04 seasons, in the latter he was an ever-present. When Wright left the club in 2003, James took over the captaincy and led the club to runner-up spot in the Conference in three successive seasons. He was also the regular penalty taker for Hereford, his most notable penalty being the opening goal in the televised 9–0 win over Dagenham & Redbridge in 2004.

In the first half of the 2000s he was widely regarded as one of the highest performing central defenders in the Conference, with Peter Shreeves stating that he was the best defender in the Conference. James also represented his country at semi-pro international level.

Thomas Albert George "Tony" James (16 September 1919 – 1981) was a Welsh professional footballer who scored 25 goals from 90 appearances in the Football League playing for Brighton & Hove Albion and Bristol Rovers. He was Brighton's top scorer in the 1947–48 season with 14 goals in all competitions. He went on to play 41 times for Southern League club Bath City. James was born in Ynysybwl, Glamorgan, and played as an inside forward.
