Wheel

A wheel is a circular component that is intended to rotate on an axle bearing. The wheel is one of the main components of the wheel and axle which is one of the six simple machines. Wheels, in conjunction with axles, allow heavy objects to be moved easily facilitating movement or transportation while supporting a load, or performing labor in machines. Wheels are also used for other purposes, such as a ship's wheel, steering wheel, potter's wheel and flywheel.

Common examples are found in transport applications. A wheel greatly reduces friction by facilitating motion by rolling together with the use of axles. In order for wheels to rotate, a moment needs to be applied to the wheel about its axis, either by way of gravity, or by the application of another external force or torque.

Etymology

The English word wheel comes from the Old English word hweol, hweogol, from Proto-Germanic *hwehwlan, *hwegwlan, from Proto-Indo-European *k^wek^wlo-, an extended form of the root *k^wel- "to revolve, move around". Cognates within Indo-European include Icelandic hjól "wheel, tyre", Greek κύκλος kúklos, and Sanskrit chakra, the latter both meaning "circle" or "wheel".

Wheels is a 2014 dramatic film directed by Donavon Warren and Tim Gagliardo and written by Donavon Warren. It stars Donavon Warren, Patrick Hume, Diana Gettinger and Kevin McCorkle. The film released theatrically in the United States on September 19, 2014.

Plot

Mickey Cole (Donavon Warren) has slit his wrists, rolled onto train tracks and thrown himself down stairs. He is a suicidal paraplegic who has restless nights with vivid dreams of walking again. After many suicide attempts, Mickey decides he needs help and seeks someone he believes has no scruples and would do anything for money.

After witnessing Drake Jones (Patrick Hume) con a businessman into giving him money, Mickey follows Drake, who is also a paraplegic, into a bar with the hopes of propositioning him to shoot Mickey in the head for $500. The two get into a bar brawl with bikers and wander out into the alley where Mickey finally asks Drake for help. In a twist of fate, the gun turns out to be filled with blanks.

After suicide evades Mickey once again, he befriends the wild-eyed Drake. Drake introduces him to the wonders of heroin and street life. Mickey meets Janet (Diana Gettinger), a prostitute who is more than willing to enable Mickey’s thirst for attention. Ironically, as Mickey becomes addicted to drugs, his friendship with Drake and his state of mind grows stronger. He struggles with childhood flashbacks and eventually confronts his estranged father Allan (Kevin McCorkle) who he claims pushed him off a roof, causing his paralysis.

Tone (literature)

Tone is a literary compound of composition, which shows the attitudes toward the subject and toward the audience implied in a literary work. Tone may be formal, informal, intimate, solemn, somber, playful, serious, ironic, condescending, or many other possible attitudes. Works of literature are often conceptualized as having at least one theme, or central question about a topic; how the theme is approached within the work constitutes the work's tone.

Difference between tone and mood

Tone and mood are not the same, although they are frequently confused. The mood of a piece of literature is the feeling or atmosphere created by the work, or, said slightly differently, how the work makes the reader feel. Mood is produced most effectively through the use of setting, theme, voice and tone. while tone is how the author feels about something.

Usage

All pieces of literature, even official documents and technical documents, have some sort of tone. Authors create tone through the use of various other literary elements, such as diction or word choice; syntax, the grammatical arrangement of words in a text for effect; imagery, or vivid appeals to the senses; details, facts that are included or omitted; and figurative language, the comparison of seemingly unrelated things for sub-textual purposes.

Tone (musical instrument)

Tone and sound are terms used by musicians and related professions to refer to the audible characteristics of a player's sound. Tone is the product of all influences on what can be heard by the listener, including the characteristics of the instrument itself, differences in playing technique (e.g. embouchure for woodwind and brass players, fretting technique or use of a slide in stringed instruments, or use of different mallets in percussion), and the physical space in which the instrument is played. In electric and electronic instruments, tone is also affected by the amplifiers, effects, and speakers used by the musician. In recorded music, tone is also influenced by the microphones, signal processors, and recording media used to record, mix, and master the final recording, as well as the listener's audio system.

Stringed instruments

The tone of a stringed instrument is influenced by factors related to construction and player technique. The instrument's shape, particularly of its resonant cavity, as well as the choice of tonewood for the body, neck, and fingerboard, are all major determinants of its tone. The material and age of the strings is also an important factor. Playing technique also influences tone, including subtle differences in the amount of pressure applied with the fretting hand, picking or bowing intensity, use of muting and/or drone techniques.

Tone (TVXQ album)

Tone (stylized as TONE) is the fifth Japanese studio album (tenth overall) by South Korean pop group Tohoshinki, released on September 28, 2011 by Avex Trax. It is Tohoshinki's first Japanese album since becoming a two-piece band, with members Yunho and Changmin. Tone was released in three physical versions – Version A, a CD+DVD version with music videos; Version B, another CD+DVD version with off-shot movies; and Version C, a CD only version with a bonus track. Composing sessions for the album began in 2009, bull full production began in early 2011.

Musically, Tone is a pop music album largely consisting of uptempos, midtempos, and ballads with R&B, electropop and rock influences. Tone received positive reviews upon its release, with some critics praising it as one of Tohoshinki's most cohesive Japanese album to-date. The album was a major commercial success; it debuted at number one on the Oricon Albums Chart, selling 205,000 copies on its first week of release. Earning a platinum certification by the Recording Industry Association of Japan (RIAJ) two weeks later, Tone eventually became Tohoshinki's best-selling Japanese studio album, with over 330,000 copies sold.
