Tommy Morrison

Tommy David Morrison (January 2, 1969 – September 1, 2013), nicknamed "The Duke", was an American professional boxer who held the WBO heavyweight title. He won 48 of 52 professional fights, and retired from boxing in 1996 when he tested positive for HIV. He appeared in the 1990 Sylvester Stallone boxing film Rocky V.

Morrison attempted a comeback in 2006, claiming he had tested negative for HIV. In August 2013, Morrison's mother announced that her son was in the final stages of AIDS, and he died on September 1, 2013.

Early life and amateur boxing

Morrison was born in Gravette, Arkansas. His mother, Diana, was of Native American descent, while his father's side was of majority Scottish descent. Morrison was raised in Delaware County, Oklahoma, spending most of his teenage years in Jay. Morrison's nickname, "The Duke", is based on the claim that he was related to Hollywood star John Wayne (né Marion Morrison). Morrison's older brother Tim Jr boxed and his father urged him to take up the sport at the age of ten. At the age of 13, Morrison claimed he used a fake ID and entered fifteen "toughman" contests (the minimum age for contestants was 21). He later told The New York Times that he lost only one of these supposed matches.

Tommy Morrison (footballer, born 1874)

Thomas "Tommy" Morrison (16 December 1874 – 26 March 1940), also known as Ching Morrison, was a former football player for Glentoran, Burnley, Celtic and Manchester United.

Morrison was the youngest of five sons born to James and Annie Morrison. The first three boys were born in Scotland and the youngest of them, Bob who was also an international, played for Linfield. Another brother, Alex, also played for Glentoran in the 1890s.

Club career

Morrison made his first appearance for Glentoran on 18 April 1891 in a Charity Cup game against Ulster at Solitude. He scored in that match which was abandoned with the Glens trailing 4–1. The following season (1891–92) saw Morrison score 11 goals in just nine games, including a hat-trick in the Irish League against Ligoniel. Two seasons later, he was part of Glentoran's Irish League winning side before moving to Burnley.

Morrison transferred to Burnley in March 1894 and made his debut in a game on March 10 against Derby. He scored one goal in a 3–1 victory. Early the following season he was dismissed by the Burnley committee for misconduct.

Tommy Morrison (footballer, born 1943)

Thomas "Tommy" Morrison (born 6 March 1943) is a Scottish former footballer who played in Scotland, England and Ireland for Aberdeen, Port Vale, and Sligo Rovers.

Playing career

Morrison started his career at First Division side Aberdeen, helping Tommy Pearson's "Dons" to 9th and 12th-place finishes in 1963–64 and 1964–65. He moved to England to join Port Vale in July 1965, who were then managed by fellow Scot Jackie Mudie. He played five Fourth Division and one League Cup games, scoring one goal in 2–2 draw with Barrow at Holker Street, in 1965–66, before being transferred to Sligo Rovers in January 1966. Morrison scored on his League of Ireland debut, and scored a total of three goals in 16 appearances for Sligo.
