Tomica

Tomica (トミカ) is the line of die-cast toy vehicles and related products produced by Takara Tomy Co. of Japan (formerly known as Tomiyama and Tomy Kogyo Incorporated) since 1970 (Rixon 2005, 99). These seem to have been a by-product of Tomica World, a separate line of motorized trains, vehicles and accessories that Tomy produced since 1959. Tomica World motorized trains and track systems, are based on Plarail (About Tomica 2013). Tomica focuses mainly, but not exclusively, on Japanese brands.

History

Tomy Co. of Japan was founded in 1924 by Eijira Tomiyama in Tokyo (Robinson 2010). The company has produced a variety of toys, but in 1970 it started to produce the Tomica line of diecast vehicles as a result of the surge of interest in the global market in toy cars mainly led by Matchbox and Mattel's Hot Wheels (About Tomica 2013). Although models of various scales have been made, the term “Tomica” normally refers to the 3-inch sized vehicles. The regular Tomica name refers to the mainstream Tomica sold at the regular price—domestic series, foreign series, or common series, depending on the time of release. Tomy Corporation made its North American and European debut in 2010, under the Tomica brand.

Tomica (comics)

Tomica (comic) is a South African webcomic, written by David Covas Lourenco and drawn by Deon de Lange.

Deon de Lange is the creator of the comic, Gofu (comic), and launched the Tomica webcomic in April 2014 with collaborator, David Covas Lourenco. A limited edition of 50 copies of a Tomica mini comic were for sale at Reader's Den Free Comic Book Day 2014.

The Tomica webcomic is also collected and printed in a unique mini-comic format, starting with Tomica #1.

Story

Tomica is a "sci-fi adventure following Tomica Twim's quest through ancient temples, disintegrating space ports, and steamy jungles across the universe".

Publication history

At San Diego Comic-Con International 2014, Tomica mini-comic #1 was available as a free giveaway at a panel about comics from South Africa and Australia: “The Pursuit of the Southern Hemisphere Comics Industry”.
