    Tom Sanders (mathematician)

Tom Sanders is an English mathematician, working on problems in additive combinatorics at the interface of harmonic analysis and analytic number theory.

Sanders studied mathematics at the University of Cambridge, taking his Ph.D. in 2007 under the direction of Timothy Gowers. He held a Junior Research Fellowship at Christ's College, Cambridge from 2006 until 2011, in addition to visiting fellowships at the Institute for Advanced Study in 2007, the MSRI in 2008, and the Mittag-Leffler Institute in 2009. Since 2011, he has held a Royal Society University Research Fellowship at the University of Oxford, where he is also a Senior Research Fellow at the Mathematical Institute, and a Tutorial Fellow at St Hugh's College.

Among other results, he has improved the theorem of Klaus Friedrich Roth on three-term arithmetic progressions, coming close to breaking the so-called logarithmic barrier. More precisely, he has shown that any subset of {1, 2, ..., N} of maximal cardinality containing no non-trivial three-term arithmetic progression is of size O\left(\frac{N (\log \log N)^5}{\log N}\right).

    Famous quotes by Tom Sanders:

"There is no set line about where anybody in that school zone should go to school, ... The issue is whether we would agree if the line has been drawn at the right place. Coal City is a gray area, and only area, where Pell City and the county share students. Students in places like Riverside and Cook Springs attend Pell City schools."
"Pell City can propose, and we can propose, ... We still have to go through attorneys and the U.S. Justice Department. There are some financial considerations where the line would be drawn."
"Our customers would consume more energy. If prices don't change, and we have a colder than normal winter, this could go up, substantially."
"It's very 'Dawn of the Dead.' There's only a few of us left. I'm not going anywhere until they stick a gun in my face. I got nowhere else to go."
"I did recommend that we accept the resignation,"
"Anytime you have something that potentially can have a negative impact on what you are doing every day, you need to become aware of what you should do to keep yourself and your family safe when you are in that environment."
"It has been the experience of other states that eradication has not been effective and is not practical, so Kansas at this point does not have any plans to even attempt eradication. If you see a hive, you can kill a hive, but to think you can exclude a pest like this from this state is impractical."
"This is a good hike at any time of year. We like hiking with snow."
"When the book first came out (in 1997), I did the hike three times in one year because I thought there would be a high demand for it. And there was."
