Tom Oliver

Tom Oliver (born 12 June 1938, Hampshire, England) is an English-Australian television, film and theatre actor best known today for playing the role of Lou Carpenter in the Australian soap opera Neighbours.

Career

Oliver started in amateur theatricals as an adolescent in Britain before pursuing a career as a jockey. However, he failed to gain an apprenticeship owing to his size. He joined the Merchant Navy at 16 and travelled the world, eventually settling in Sydney in 1956. In Australia he found work as a stockman, spending three years in this job, working his way around the country. He subsequently returned to the UK before beginning an overland trek across Asia to return to Australia. However, the journey was halted by illness and he returned to Britain where Oliver contacted Albert Finney who was then planning to produce the film Ned Kelly in Australia in 1963. Finney gave him a letter of introduction to an agency in Sydney and Oliver emigrated in 1963, later becoming an Australian citizen. Oliver became a busy theatre and television actor in Australia. He had many guest starring roles on Australian drama series, appearing frequently in the top-rated Crawford Productions police dramas Homicide, Division 4 and Matlock Police, and in Crawford's adventure series Hunter (1967). Oliver was then cast in serial Bellbird, playing the role of Tom Grey from 1969 to 1971. After this he returned to television guest roles for Crawfords, and other companies. He also played two roles in the Gerry Anderson series UFO – A doctor in the episode entitled "Confetti Check A-OK" as well as a SHADO technician in the episode entitled "The Sound of Silence".

Big Brother 10 (UK)

Big Brother 2009, also known as Big Brother 10, was the tenth series of the British reality television series Big Brother. It began on 4 June 2009 and was aired on Channel 4 and E4 for 93 days, concluding on 4 September 2009 when Sophie "Dogface" Reade was crowned the winner with 74.4% of the viewer's vote. The format of the programme remained largely unchanged from previous series; a group of people, referred to as housemates, are enclosed in the Big Brother House under the surveillance of cameras and microphones. Each week, the viewers decide which of a selection of housemates is evicted and, in the final week, one housemate is voted as the winner. The daily highlights programme was narrated by Marcus Bentley, Davina McCall fronted the launch programme, evictions, special episodes, the final and Big Brother's Big Mouth and George Lamb presented Big Brother's Little Brother.

The programme included 22 participants, four of whom left the programme voluntarily whilst the fate of the others was decided by the public vote. The housemates were originally competing to win a £100,000 prize but, due to rule-breaking by the participants, this was reduced to £71,320. The series, which was sponsored by Lucozade, achieved significantly less media coverage and viewing figures, resulting in it becoming the least-watched series in Big Brother UK history until Big Brother 12 in 2011. This series also attracted controversy, with accusations of bullying between contestants drawing complaints and criticisms levelled at the welfare of housemates after they left the programme.

Tom Oliver (baseball)

Thomas Noble Oliver (January 15, 1903 – February 26, 1988) was a center fielder in Major League Baseball who played from 1930 through 1933 for the Boston Red Sox. Listed at 6 ft 0 in (1.83 m), 168 lb, Oliver batted and threw right-handed. He was born in Montgomery, Alabama.

Oliver was a slap hitter who rarely tried to drive the ball. As an outfielder, his arm and speed were already well above average, while his graceful style prompted baseball historian Fred Lieb to compare him to Joe DiMaggio and Tris Speaker.

In his rookie season for Boston, Oliver led the American League in games played (154), outs (472) and at-bats (646), while hitting a career-high .293 and leading his team in runs (86), hits (186) and singles (153). He enjoyed another good season in 1931, when he hit .276 and posted career-numbers in doubles (35) and RBI (75). He also led his team in singles (122), triples (5) and outs (436), and was considered in the American League MVP vote. The next two years he shared duties at center field with Dusty Cooke and Carl Reynolds.
