Tom Nolan

Thomas "Tom" Nolan (27 July 1921 – 17 August 1992) was an Irish Fianna Fáil politician.

Life and work

Nolan was born in Cappawater, Myshall, County Carlow in 1921. He was educated at the De La Salle College in Muine Bheag and joined the Irish Defence Forces shortly after his education. He first held political office in 1960 when he was elected to Carlow County Council. The following year he was nominated by the Taoiseach, Seán Lemass, to the 10th Seanad Éireann.

Nolan was first elected to Dáil Éireann as a Fianna Fáil Teachta Dála (TD) for the Carlow–Kilkenny constituency at the 1965 general election. He was re-elected at the next four general elections, but was defeated at the February 1982 general election, and did not stand again. Nolan had also served as a Member of the European Parliament (MEP) in the period when MEPs were appointed by national parliaments rather than directly elected, serving from 1973 until the first direct elections in 1979.

In the Dáil, Nolan was Minister of State at the Department of Health and Social Welfare in early 1980 and held one brief Cabinet position during his career, joining the Cabinet under Charles Haughey as Minister for Labour from December 1980 to June 1981.

Tom Nolan (Australian rules footballer)

Thomas Patrick "Tom" Nolan (11 December 1876 – 27 May 1930) was an Australian rules footballer who played with Fitzroy in the Victorian Football League (VFL).

Nolan joined Fitzroy for the 1899 VFL season and made his senior debut in Round 10, against Geelong. After one more match in the seniors, in Round 11, Nolan returned to the reserves and did not play another senior game.

Nolan become a lawyer and was also a state champion race walker. His brothers Bernie, Jerry and Herb also played football in the VFL.

Nolan died on 27 May 1930 of heart failure in Epworth Hospital in Richmond, Victoria. He left a widow.

Background

Nolan was born Bernard Girouard in Montreal, Canada, to parents of French and Irish descent. His family moved to Beverly in Essex County in northeastern Massachusetts, where he immediately started dance classes. His television debut was as Edward, Prince of Wales, the son of Henry VIII, on NBC's Hallmark Hall of Fame. The jug-eared lad often portrayed young boys with afflictions, such as a crippled youngster on an episode of CBS's My Friend Flicka or an asthmatic on NBC's Medic, the first television medical series. He appeared in two episodes of the NBC anthology series, Thriller: as a disturbed young boy in "Child's Play" and as a violently protective brother in "Parasite Mansion".

Child actor

At the age of ten, Nolan was cast as Jody O'Connell in the NBC Western series Buckskin, which ran for thirty-nine episodes from July 3, 1958 to September 14, 1959. It started as a summer replacement series for The Ford Show, Starring Tennessee Ernie Ford and was held over after a month's hiatus in October 1958. It was repeated in the summers of 1959 and 1965.

Tom Nolan (hurler)

Tom (Tomásin) Nolan (born Clandouglas, Lixnaw, Co Kerry) was a hurler from Co Kerry. He played with the Kerry and the Crotta O'Neill's club.

Nolan was at his best at midfield during Crotta's glorious period in the 1940s and early 1950s. During that time Crotta O'Neill's were one of the strongest sides in Kerry hurling. He won six Kerry Senior Hurling Championships. Nolan won the first of his County Championship medals in 1943, when Crotta, defeated Kenmare in the final. The Crotta team went on to complete three-in-a-row in 1944 and 1945 and took further titles in 1947, 1950 and 1951, with Nolan at mid-field in five of the victories. He was captain in 1950 and '51 teams. Nolan went on to play in further county finals in 1952 and 1957 but Crotta were defeated in both. Nolan was a central figure in most of the Crotta teams that reigned supreme, winning eight county titles between 1939 and 1951. He and his fellow Kerryman Frank Kissane, (Ardfert's 1949 winning captain), both played in the Limerick Senior Hurling Championship when they were brought in as 'guest' for Tournafulla. They later went on to win the Limerick Championship for the club.

Thomas Gerard "Tom" Nolan (13 June 1909 – 1969) was an English footballer, noted for his powerful cannonball shots.

Playing career

Nolan played for Preston North End and Manchester Central, before joining Port Vale in October 1931. He hit 11 goals in 21 games to become the club's top-scorer, helping the "Valiants" to remain in the Second Division on goal average. Nolan then scored eight goals in 17 appearances in 1932–33, including a hat-trick in a 4–1 win over Plymouth Argyle at The Old Recreation Ground on 29 April.

In the 1933–34 season he scored 22 goals in 32 appearances, including hat-tricks in home wins over Bury, Hull City, and Nottingham Forest. He was the club's top-scorer for a second successive season in 1934–35, hitting 16 goals in 40 games. However, he was transferred to Bradford Park Avenue in July 1935. He hit 17 goals in 42 league appearances at Park Avenue, before he returned to Port Vale in a trade for George Stabb in September 1936. The "Valiants" had been relegated to the Third Division North in his absence. He hit 12 goals in 41 appearances in 1936–37, including a hat-trick over eventual league champions Stockport County. He was dropped at the start of the 1937–38 campaign in favour of Jack Roberts, though he still managed to hit the net seven times in his 20 appearances. He hit 17 goals in 41 games in 1938–39 to become the club's top-scorer for a fourth time. In February 1940, Nolan retired from the game due to his war duties. In his two spells with Port Vale he scored 96 goals in 221 appearances, over all competitions.
