Tom Curran

Tom Curran FRS is a Scottish medical researcher, and Professor of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine, at University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine. He is Associate Director of Translational Genomics, at the Penn Genome Frontiers Institute.

Life

He took a B.Sc. (Hons) from the University of Edinburgh, and Ph.D. from the University College London.

He was chairman of the department of developmental neurobiology at St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.

He was president of the American Association for Cancer Research in 2000. He is a member of the Institute of Medicine.

Tom Curran (hurler)

Tom Curran (born 1920) was an Irish hurler who played as a left corner-forward for the Waterford senior team.

Born in Dungarvan, County Waterford, Curran first excelled at hurling in his youth. After enjoying success as a Gaelic footballer with the Waterford junior team, he subsequently became a regular member of the Waterford senior hurling team. Curran went on to win one All-Ireland medal and one Munster medal.

At club level Curran was a six-time championship medallist with Dungarvan as a dual player.

Tom Curran (cricketer)

Thomas Kevin Curran (born 12 March 1995) is a South African-born English cricketer who plays for Surrey. Curran is a right-handed batsman who bowls right-arm fast-medium. He is the son of former Zimbabwe international Kevin Curran, and the brother of Surrey all-rounder Sam Curran.

Born in Cape Town, Curran attended Springvale House, a preparatory school in Zimbabwe before moving on to Hilton College where he represented KwaZulu-Natal Inland at under-15, under-17 and under-19 level. Noticed playing schools cricket by former Surrey captain Ian Greig, he was invited to play for the Surrey second XI in 2012, and transferred to Wellington College in September of that year. He made his senior debut for Surrey in a List A match against Essex in August 2013, and his First Class debut against Cambridge University in April 2014.

Curran was selected for the England Performance Programme squad in September 2015; he completed his residential qualification for England in October 2015. He is also eligible to represent Ireland.

North Melbourne Football Club

The North Melbourne Football Club, nicknamed the Kangaroos or less formally the Roos, the Kangas or North, is the fourth oldest Australian rules football club in the Australian Football League (AFL) and is one of the oldest sporting clubs in Australia and the world. It is based at the Arden Street Oval in the inner Melbourne suburb of North Melbourne, but plays its home matches at the nearby Docklands Stadium.

The club's mascot is a grey or red kangaroo, and its use dates from the middle of the 20th century. The club is also unofficially known as 'The Shinboners', a term which dates back to its 19th-century abattoir-worker origins. The club's motto is Victoria amat curam, Latin for "Victory Demands Dedication".

Formative years

North Melbourne Football Club originated in the year 1869, when a football team was formed for local cricketers desiring to keep fit over the winter months. One thought is that the club was connected to the St Mary's Church of England Cricket Club, now the St Mary's Anglican Church North Melbourne, whose colours – blue and white – are reflected in the North Melbourne's colours today. The association between the St Mary's Church of England Cricket Club and the establishment of the North Melbourne Football Club is believed to have been an informal gathering to play some competitive sport. Information on the club's first ever match is limited, but it is known that it took place in Royal Park, which also served as the club's home ground until 1882. The ball used in the match was purchased by a local resident called Tom Jacks, who sold some roofing iron to pay for it. James Henry Gardiner is considered the founder of the club. He continued an active role with North Melbourne until his death in 1921.
