Tom Boyd (footballer)

Thomas "Tom" Boyd MBE (born 24 November 1965 in Glasgow) is a retired footballer and current manager of the Celtic U-17.

He played for Motherwell, Chelsea and Celtic, and played 72 times for Scotland, which means he is a member of the Scotland national football team roll of honour.

Club career

Motherwell

Boyd's distinguished professional career began at Motherwell, where he made a total of 252 appearances. The most notable of his achievements in his time at Fir Park was skippering the Motherwell side that defeated Dundee United 4–3 in the 1991 Scottish Cup Final, considered one of the most exciting in the competition's history.

Chelsea

Boyd's form as an attacking full back saw him win a move to Chelsea that year. However, Boyd struggled to settle and spent only one year at Stamford Bridge.

Celtic

Boyd was transferred to boyhood heroes Celtic in an exchange deal which saw Tony Cascarino going to Chelsea. He played for Celtic for the remainder of his career, serving as club captain from 1997 to 2002. He holds the distinction of having been the captain who lifted Celtic's first league title in 10 years in 1998, preventing bitter rivals Rangers from securing a record-breaking ten titles in a row.

Tom Boyd (Northern Ireland politician)

Tom Boyd (April 1903 - 6 December 1991) was a shipyard worker, patternmaker, trade unionist and politician in Northern Ireland.

After studying at Belfast Technical College and Queen's University, Belfast, Boyd became prominent in the United Patternmakers' Association. Joining the Northern Ireland Labour Party (NILP), he stood for election to the Belfast Board of Guardians in 1933.

In the Northern Ireland general election, 1938, Boyd stood unsuccessfully in Belfast Victoria. In the 1945 UK general election, he stood for the Westminster seat of Belfast East, taking 43.6% of the vote. He stood for the seat again in 1950, 1951 and 1955, but never came so close to election.

In the Northern Ireland general election, 1949, Boyd stood in Belfast Bloomfield, and in 1953, he stood in Belfast Pottinger. He finally won this seat in 1958, and on election he became the leader of the NILP, a post he held until finally losing his seat at the 1969 election.

Following his defeat, Boyd led the Presbyterian Church of Ireland Social Services Committee until 1978.
