Tokyo Marathon

The Tokyo Marathon (東京マラソン, Tokyo Marason) is an annual marathon sporting event in Tokyo, the capital of Japan. It is an IAAF Gold Label marathon and one of the six World Marathon Majors. The latest edition of the race took place on Sunday February 22, 2015. It is sponsored by Tokyo Metro.

History

The first Tokyo Marathon was held on 18 February 2007. However, years prior to 2007, Tokyo Marathon actually consisted of two marathons - the Tokyo International Marathon which took place on even years, and Tokyo - New York Friendship International Marathon which took place on odd years. In the inaugural year, 1981, both marathons took place. However, because it was not possible to support two marathons a month apart in the same city, from 1982, the alternating format went into effect.

The 2007 marathon was also a representative selection race of the 2007 World Championships in Athletics in Osaka. The total number of participants was set at 30,000. Of that, 25,000 people signed up for the marathon, and 5,000 signed up for the 10K run.

2016 Tokyo Marathon

The 2016 Tokyo Marathon (Japanese: 東京マラソン 2016) is the tenth edition of the annual marathon race in Tokyo, Japan and will be held on Sunday, 28 February. An IAAF Gold Label Road Race, it will be the first World Marathon Majors event to be held that year.

2015 Tokyo Marathon

The 2015 Tokyo Marathon (Japanese: 東京マラソン 2015) was the ninth edition of the annual marathon race in Tokyo, Japan and was held on Sunday, 22 February. An IAAF Gold Label Road Race, it was the first World Marathon Majors event to be held that year and represented the third occasion that the Tokyo race was part of the elite-level marathon series.

The elite race winners were both from Ethiopia – the first such time that athletes from the same nation won the men's and women's division. Endeshaw Negesse was just over twenty seconds off the course record with 2:06:00 hours while Berhane Dibaba took the women's title in 2:23:15. It was the first major marathon win for both athletes, although Berhane Dibaba had been runner-up in Tokyo the previous year. The reigning Olympic and world champion Stephen Kiprotich was runner-up in the men's race and Dickson Chumba was third, failing to defend his title. The women's podiumw as rounded out by Helah Kiprop (2014 winner of the Seoul International Marathon) and reigning Olympic champion Tiki Gelana. The 2014 women's champion, Tirfi Tsegaye did not return to defend her title. The fastest home athletes both finished in seventh position overall: Masato Imai in the men's and Madoka Ogi in the women's division.

Tokyo

Tokyo (東京, Tōkyō, "Eastern Capital") (Japanese: [toːkjoː], English /ˈtoʊki.oʊ/), officially Tokyo Metropolis (東京都, Tōkyō-to), is one of the 47 prefectures of Japan, and is both the capital and largest city of Japan. The Greater Tokyo Area is the most populous metropolitan area in the world. It is the seat of the Emperor of Japan and the Japanese government. Tokyo is in the Kantō region on the southeastern side of the main island Honshu and includes the Izu Islands and Ogasawara Islands. Formerly known as Edo, it has been the de facto seat of government since 1603 when Shogun Tokugawa Ieyasu made the city his headquarters. It officially became the capital after Emperor Meiji moved his seat to the city from the old capital of Kyoto in 1868; at that time Edo was renamed Tokyo. Tokyo Metropolis was formed in 1943 from the merger of the former Tokyo Prefecture (東京府, Tōkyō-fu) and the city of Tokyo (東京市, Tōkyō-shi).

In 2008, Danny participated with the song in Polish Sopot International Song Festival

Chart performance

The song entered and peaked at #4 on Swedish Trackslistan on 24 February 2007 and charted for six weeks. The song peaked at #1 on the Swedish singles chart on 22 February 2007.

Tokyo (Athlete song)

"Tokyo" is a song by English indie rock band Athlete and is the third track on their 2007 album Beyond the Neighbourhood. The song was released as the second single from that album on November 19, 2007 (see 2007 in British music). The song charted at #198 making it Athlete's lowest charting single to date, partly due to a lack of promotion, and partly due to UK Chart guidelines discounting sales of the EP version (thus only sales of the 7" were counted).
