A warship is a naval ship that is built and primarily intended for naval warfare. Usually they belong to the armed forces of a state. As well as being armed, warships are designed to withstand damage and are usually faster and more maneuverable than merchant ships. Unlike a merchant ship, which carries cargo, a warship typically carries only weapons, ammunition and supplies for its crew. Warships usually belong to a navy, though they have also been operated by individuals, cooperatives and corporations.
In wartime, the distinction between warships and merchant ships is often blurred. In war, merchant ships are often armed and used as auxiliary warships, such as the Q-ships of the First World War and the armed merchant cruisers of the Second World War. Until the 17th century it was common for merchant ships to be pressed into naval service and not unusual for more than half a fleet to be composed of merchant ships. Until the threat of piracy subsided in the 19th century, it was normal practice to arm larger merchant ships such as galleons. Warships have also often been used as troop carriers or supply ships, such as by the French Navy in the 18th century or the Japanese Navy during the Second World War.
Warship was a post-hardcore band formed in Long Island in 2008. Former From Autumn to Ashes members Francis Mark (vocals, drums) and Rob Lauritsen (guitar, bass) formed the band following the From Autumn to Ashes' announced indefinite hiatus on June 9, 2008. Mark chose the name Warship, which came from an instance in 2007 when he was creating paintings on blank worship candles, and a friend questioned what he was doing. Mark replied with "making worship candles", however, the friend believed Mark was creating candles with actual warships depicted on them. Mark explains, "This led me to thinking about the relationship between the two. How discouraging it is when 'worship' begets 'warships.'"
Warship debuted two songs "Toil" and "Wounded Paw" available on their Myspace, shortly after opening the page. The band has finished recording their debut release with producer Andrew Schneider in a New York studio. The album, entitled Supply and Depend, was confirmed for release on Vagrant Records on November 4, 2008. A tracklisting, album art, and information on the album can be viewed on the Vagrant Records website.
Warship is a British documentary series produced by Channel 5 about the Royal Navy. The series features two Navy ships and documents the daily routines of the crew on board during a deployment or exercise. The first series focused on the lives of the crew on board the aircraft carrier HMS Illustrious. The second series was filmed on the amphibious warfare ships HMS Bulwark and HMS Ocean during a six-month exercise in 2009.
You toil and stress
Scratch and obsess
The measure of man doesn't make me who I am
Wanting more, wanting more, wondering?
Why do we toil and stress
Scratch and obsess
yearn and hope for the best
Without rest
Wanting more
Wanting more than what we've been fooled to want for
Music sparked a fire and it burns in me forever
When we get pushed apart the rhythm pulls us back together
Music sparked a fire and it burns in me forever
Don't get distracted, when a movement needs your motion
Distressed and distracted when a movement needs your motion
We get no reaction if your eyes have not been open
Distressed and distracted when a movement needs your motion?
Misguided young traitors
You huddle in chambers and bicker about the descent
While the deadliest vapors
Keep misting the framework of honest, hardworking men
Then at the final hour no one wants to die a sinner
They find that missing motive to repent and be delivered
To stand at the gates asking, "did I deserve this?"
