Today (UK newspaper)

Today was a national newspaper in the United Kingdom and was published between 1986 and 1995.

History

Today, with the American newspaper USA Today as an inspiration, launched on Tuesday 4 March 1986, with the front page headline, "Second Spy Inside GCHQ". At 18p, it was a middle-market tabloid, a rival to the long-established Daily Mail and Daily Express. It pioneered computer photo-typesetting and full-colour offset printing at a time when national newspapers were still using Linotype machines, letterpress and could only reproduce photographs in black and white. The colour was initially crude, produced on equipment which had no facility for colour proofing, so the first view of the colour was on the finished product. However, it forced the conversion of all UK national newspapers to electronic production and colour printing. The newspaper's motto, hung in the newsroom, was "propa truth, not propaganda".

Launched by regional newspaper entrepreneur Eddy Shah, it was bought by Tiny Rowland's Lonrho within four months. (Shah would launch the short-lived, unsuccessful national tabloid The Post in 1988.) Alastair Campbell was political editor and his long-term partner, Fiona Millar was news editor.

UK newspapers can generally be split into two distinct categories; the more serious and intellectual newspapers, usually referred to as the broadsheets due to their large size, and sometimes known collectively as "the quality press", and newspapers, generally known as tabloids, and collectively as "the popular press", which have tended to focus more on celebrity coverage and human interest stories rather than political reporting or overseas news. The tabloids in turn have been divided into the more sensationalist mass market titles, or "red tops", such as The Sun and The Mirror, and the middle-market papers, The Daily Express and The Daily Mail.

The Independent and The Times have changed in recent years to a compact format, not much bigger than that used by the tabloids. The Guardian moved in September 2005 to what is described as a "Berliner" format, slightly larger than a compact. Its Sunday stablemate The Observer has since followed suit.

Other Sunday broadsheets, including The Sunday Times, which tend to have a large amount of supplementary sections, have kept their larger sized format. The national Sunday titles usually have a different layout and style to their weekly sister papers, and are produced by separate journalistic and editorial staff.

Today (1960 TV series)

Today is an Australian television series which aired from 1960 to 1961 on Melbourne station GTV-9. Originally hosted by Barry McQueen, most episodes were hosted by Hal Todd. It was a morning series aired at 7:30AM, and running for 60 minutes (90 minutes on Saturdays). It included news, weather and exercise instruction. Following the end of the series, Hal Todd began hosting Toddy Time. Following the end of the series, GTV-9 stopped offering morning programming for several years. Previously, it had aired In Melbourne Today in a morning time-slot on Saturdays from 1957 to 1958.

Reception

Reviewing the first two episodes, The Age gave it a mixed review, saying that "Today showed some entertaining segments" but also stated that "Today didn't flow as smoothly as such programmes are required to flow".
