The Echo is an American music venue and nightclub, located in the Echo Park neighborhood of Los Angeles, California. The venue is also known for their punk rock shows, which attract long lines of fans.

The Echo (London)

The Echo, founded in 1868 in London by Cassell, Petter, Galpin & Co., was the first halfpenny evening newspaper. It was published daily except on Sunday. Sometimes its Saturday edition appeared under the name The Cricket Echo or The Football Echo. Issue Number 1 appeared on 8 December 1868. The Echo ceased publication with Issue Number 11,391 on 31 July 1905.

History

Arthur Arnold was the editor for Messrs. Cassell, Petter & Galpin, who owned The Echo from 1868 until they sold it to Albert Grant in 1875. Upon the purchase by Grant, Arnold resigned as editor and went on a long trip to Russia and Persia. In less than 12 months as owner, Grant sold the newspaper to John Passmore Edwards in 1876. Edwards was the editor until its eventual sale in 1896 to a syndicate created for the purpose of purchasing The Echo. In 1884 Edwards sold a two-thirds interest in the paper to Andrew Carnegie and Samuel Storey but repurchased the entire interest due to disagreements over management policy. After selling his interest in 1896 Edwards left the paper.The Echo struggled financially and the syndicate sold a controlling interest to Frederick William Pethick-Lawrence in 1901. Pethick-Lawrence ran The Echo from 1902 to 1905, shutting down operations in August 1905.

Nail (album)

Nail is the fourth studio album by Scraping Foetus Off the Wheel. It was released in October 1985, through record labels Self Immolation and Some Bizzare.

Background

The album incorporates a variety of musical genres, including classical and industrial rock, and the lyrics are often esoteric. For example, the tempo and instrumentation in "Descent into the Inferno" is infrequent: the song's first half is sparse and percussive; in the latter stages the song gathers momentum and features synthesizers. "The Overture from Pigdom Come", a composition resembling a classical piece of music, is juxtaposed with perhaps the most brutal track on the album, "Private War", a track that features one minute of various grinding noises.

There are various obscure references within the songs, some more lucid than others. "The Throne of Agony" has the lyrics "Alas, poor Yorick, I knew me well", a paraphrase of a line from Shakespeare's Hamlet (Hamlet: "Alas, poor Yorick! I knew him, Horatio..."). The line "Turn on, tune in, drop out" in "DI-1-9026" refers to the Timothy Leary phrase. Jack and the Beanstalk is also referenced, with a variation of the chant "Fee, fie, foe, fum!" appearing in the final track.

Echo (Marvel Comics)

Echo (Maya Lopez), also known as Ronin, is a fictional character, a Marvel Comics superheroine and a supporting character of Daredevil. She makes her first appearance in Daredevil Vol. 2, #9 (Dec. 1999), and was created by David Mack and Joe Quesada. She is a Native American and one of the very few deaf comic characters.

When she dons her "Echo" guise, she is easily recognizable by a white hand print which covers most of her face.

Character creation

The identity of Ronin was an attempt by New Avengers writer Brian Michael Bendis to create a mystery after the apparently male character was depicted on several comic book covers, including issues of New Avengers, and one Pulse issue. Fan speculation was high, with the most common guess that Ronin was Daredevil (despite Bendis initially denying that this was the case, he eventually revealed this to be the original intention). However, Avengers: The Ultimate Guide, a DK Press book, revealed Ronin to be Echo weeks before the slightly delayed release of New Avengers #13, where Ronin's true identity was belatedly revealed.

Ghosts of the Past (album)

Ghosts of the Past is the fifth studio album by Australian rock band Eskimo Joe, released on 12 August 2011.

It is the band's first album to be released on their independent record label, Dirt Diamonds Productions. In an interview with the band, they described the album's sound as less polished than their previous album. Recording for the album began in late 2010 and finished in February 2011. The first track to be released and heard from the album's recording sessions was "When We Were Kids". On 24 June 2011, the first single titled "Love is a Drug" was released for download on iTunes and to radio stations across Australia.

Echo (Dollhouse)

Echo is a fictional character portrayed by Eliza Dushku in the Fox science fiction series Dollhouse, created by Joss Whedon. Within the series' narrative, Echo is an "Active" or a "doll", one of a group of men and women who can be programmed with memories and skills to engage in particular assignments; in their default state, Actives are innocent, childlike and suggestible. Before having her memories wiped, Echo's name was Caroline Farrell. The central character of Dollhouse, the series focuses on Echo as she begins to develop self-awareness. By the series' conclusion, Echo develops a fully formed self, personality, and the aggregate skills and abilities of all her many personalities, which she uses in her struggle against the evil Rossum Corporation which owns the Dollhouses and plots world domination.

Character

Before the Dollhouse

Caroline Farrell is revealed to have been a student at a Los Angeles university which hosted a research lab for the Rossum Corporation. Feeling called to expose the likely animal abuses carried on in the highly secretive laboratory, she and her boyfriend Leo snuck into the lab with cameras through underground piping and discovered not only encaged animals but also evidence of tampering with infants and the human brain. She and Leo were caught in the act, and Leo was apparently fatally wounded. Knowing Caroline knew too much about the Corporation (whose research created the Dollhouse), and knowing that she was heartbroken over the death of Leo, Adelle DeWitt was contacted to recruit Caroline, but she disappears before the offer could be made.
