The single sold around 180,000 copies on the first day of its release on July 7, 2010, debuting at number one on the Oricon daily singles chart.[3] On July 13, 2010, "To Be Free" placed at number-one on the Oricon weekly singles chart, becoming the group's twentieth consecutive number-one single since their 2004 single "Pikanchi Double".[4] Together with member Satoshi Ohno's solo single "Yukai Tsukai Kaibutsu-kun" (ユカイツーカイ怪物くん?), which was released on the same day as "To Be Free" and placed at number-two, Arashi and Ohno accomplished the rare feat of a group and a solo artist from the group simultaneously taking the top two spots for the first time in nearly ten years.[5]

"To Be Free" remained number-one on the Billboard Japan Hot 100 chart for two consecutive weeks.[6][7] According to Oricon, "To Be Free" is the tenth best-selling single of 2010 in Japan.[8]

    Yeah to be free
    Or to feel free
The first one is a myth
For to be is to feel and to be real is to see
    You want more
    You say you want me
He left us alone as day was dawning
    You got more
    Did you get me
Red sleeps after sunrise has fallen
    You hard core
    You're hard on me
You're dressed up at dawn way before me
Bereft as the sunlight was falling upon me
    To be free
    Or to feel free
The first one is a myth
    To be free
    Or to feel free
The first one is a myth
To be is to feel and to be real is to see
To come is so organic unbelievable
A solitary sign to open up your mind
A love that's so organic unbelievable
A solitary sign to open up your mind
