Tiverton (UK Parliament constituency)

Tiverton was a constituency located in east Devon, formerly represented in the House of Commons of the Parliament of the United Kingdom. Enfranchised as a parliamentary borough in 1615 and first represented in 1621, it elected two Members of Parliament (MPs) by the first past the post system of election until 1885. The name was then transferred to a county constituency electing one MP. (Between 1885 and 1918, the constituency was alternatively called Devon, North East.)

In 1997, it was merged with the neighbouring constituency of Honiton to form the Tiverton and Honiton constituency.

Prime Minister Lord Palmerston was a former MP for the seat.

1918-1950: The Municipal Borough of Tiverton, the Urban Districts of Bampton and Dawlish, the Rural Districts of Oulmstock and Tiverton, in the Rural District of Newton Abbot the civil parish of West Dawlish, and part of the Rural District of St Thomas.

1950-1974: The Municipal Borough of Tiverton, the Urban Districts of Dawlish and Teignmouth, the Rural District of Tiverton, and part of the Rural District of St Thomas.

Tiverton (CDP), Rhode Island

Tiverton is a census-designated place (CDP) in Newport County, Rhode Island, United States. The CDP encompasses the town center of Tiverton and the adjacent village of North Tiverton. The population of the CDP was 7,282 at the 2000 census.

Geography

Tiverton is located at 41°39′15″N 71°12′1″W / 41.65417°N 71.20028°W / 41.65417; -71.20028.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 6.6 square miles (17.0 km²). 4.2 square miles (10.8 km²) of it is land and 2.4 square miles (6.2 km²), or 36.63%, is water.

Culture and recreation

Soccer

During the 1920s and early 1930s North Tiverton was effectively the home of Fall River Marksmen, one of the era’s most successful soccer teams. They played their home games at Mark's Stadium, which was based in the community. The stadium is also one of the earliest examples of a soccer-specific stadium in the United States.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there were 7,282 people, 3,044 households, and 2,088 families residing in the CDP. The population density was 1,747.5 per square mile (674.2/km²). There were 3,199 housing units at an average density of 767.7 per square mile (296.2/km²). The racial makeup of the CDP was 97.79% White, 0.37% Black or African American, 0.21% Native American, 0.49% Asian, 0.07% Pacific Islander, 0.26% from other races, and 0.81% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.99% of the population.
