Trimming (computer programming)

In computer programming, trimming (trim) or stripping (strip) is a string manipulation in which leading and trailing whitespace is removed from a string.

Definition of whitespace

The characters which are considered whitespace varies between programming languages and implementations. For example, C traditionally only counts space, tab, line feed, and carriage return characters, while languages which support Unicode typically include all Unicode space characters. Some implementations also include ASCII control codes (non-printing characters) along with whitespace characters.

Java's trim method considers ASCII spaces and control codes as whitespace, contrasting with the Java isWhitespace() method, which recognizes all Unicode space characters.

Delphi's Trim function considers characters U+0000 (NULL) through U+0020 (SPACE) to be whitespace.

Usage

Following are examples of trimming a string using several programming languages. All of the implementations shown return a new string and do not alter the original variable.

Trim (computing)

A Trim command (known as TRIM in the ATA command set, and UNMAP in the SCSI command set) allows an operating system to inform a solid-state drive (SSD) which blocks of data are no longer considered in use and can be wiped internally.

Trim was introduced soon after SSDs were introduced. Because low-level operation of SSDs differs significantly from hard drives, the typical way in which operating systems handle operations like deletes and formats resulted in unanticipated progressive performance degradation of write operations on SSDs. Trimming enables the SSD to handle garbage collection overhead, which would otherwise significantly slow down future write operations to the involved blocks, in advance.

Although tools to "reset" some drives to a fresh state were already available before the introduction of trimming, they also delete all data on the drive, which makes them impractical to use for ongoing optimization. By 2014 many SSDs had internal idle/background garbage collection mechanisms that work independently of trimming; although this successfully maintains their performance even under operating systems that do not support Trim, it has the associated drawbacks of increased write amplification and wear of the flash cells.

Draft (hull)

The draft (American) or draught (British) of a ship's hull is the vertical distance between the waterline and the bottom of the hull (keel), with the thickness of the hull included; in the case of not being included the draft outline would be obtained. Draft determines the minimum depth of water a ship or boat can safely navigate. The draft can also be used to determine the weight of the cargo on board by calculating the total displacement of water and then using Archimedes' principle. A table made by the shipyard shows the water displacement for each draft. The density of the water (salt or fresh) and the content of the ship's bunkers has to be taken into account. The closely related term "trim" is defined as the difference between the forward and aft drafts.

Bionicle characters consist of the various species and races that exist in the fictional universe of Lego's franchise Bionicle.

The universe is mostly inhabited by beings with a skeletal and muscular structure, but metallic armor rather than skin. Most beings' skulls are bare, and they wear Kanohi Masks, of which some enable psychokinetic feats.

The Matoran Universe

The Matoran are a race of small humanoid beings, and the most common inhabitants of their namesake universe. A few become Toa at some point in their lives; but in their natural state, their elemental energies manifest as minor physical enhancements, and they cannot activate the powers of Kanohi Masks. Though they are among the weakest races, they will fight to the last for their homes and lives, and are able to create fortresses, weapons, defense machines, and whatever other tools they need. The Matoran live by the principles of Unity, Duty, and Destiny. All Water, Lightning, & Psionics Matoran are female; all others, with the exception of Light and Shadow, are male. Both Light and Shadow are mix-gender. Light Matoran, more commonly known as Av-Matoran, can change the colour of their armour and channel power through their weapons. Certain Matoran such as Fe-Matoran of iron and De-Matoran of sonics, have been reduced in number by the Brotherhood of Makuta.

Titans (cricket team)

The Titans (known as The Unlimited Titans for sponsorship reasons) is a northernmost top-level cricket franchise in South Africa. Its member unions are the Easterns Cricket Union and Northerns Cricket Union. The home venues of the Titans are SuperSport Park, Centurion and Willowmoore Park, Benoni.

The Titans play in the Sunfoil Series first class competition, the Momentum One Day Cup and Ram Slam T20 Challenge. They have been Supersport Series and MiWay T20 Challenge champions in the past decade, and had qualified to take part in the Champions League Twenty20 where they narrowly lost to the Sydney Sixers at SuperSport Park.

The Titans were also crowned Momentum One Day Cup champions in the 2014/15 season, beating the Cape Cobras in the final.

Titans played very well in their first CLT20 and qualified for the semi-finals, where the Sydney Sixers nailed a win of the last ball in front of a massive crowd at SuperSport Park, Centurion. In the 2013 edition,they played well in the group stage, winning 2 matches and facing defeat in 2, but failed to qualify at the expense of T&T and the Chennai Super Kings.

Titans (U.S. TV series)

Titans is an American prime time soap opera that debuted on October 4, 2000 on NBC. Thirteen episodes were filmed, of which eleven were actually aired. Produced by Aaron Spelling, the series was initially marketed as a "Dynasty for the new millennium," attempting to emulate the style of Spelling's earlier hit series. However, low ratings led NBC to cancel the series before its first season was completed.

Synopsis

Aviation magnate Richard Williams (Perry King) is engaged to the much-younger Heather (Yasmine Bleeth), but is unaware that she previously had an affair with his son, Chandler (Casper Van Dien). A pilot, Chandler is unsure whether he should tell his father the truth, but Chandler soon discovers that Heather is pregnant with his child.
