Timothy White

Timothy White or Tim White may refer to:

Tim D. White

Timothy Douglas White (born August 24, 1950) is an American paleoanthropologist and Professor of Integrative Biology at the University of California, Berkeley. He is most famous for his work on Lucy as Australopithecus afarensis with discoverer Donald Johanson.

Career

White was born August 24, 1950, in Los Angeles County, California and raised in Lake Arrowhead in neighboring San Bernardino County. He majored in biology and anthropology at the University of California, Riverside. He received his Ph.D. in physical anthropology from the University of Michigan. White took a position in the Department of Anthropology at the University of California, Berkeley in 1977 later migrating to the university's Department of Integrative Biology. At present, White teaches courses on human paleontology and human osteology. Generally, each spring semester he teaches one of the two in alternation.

He is director of the Human Evolution Research Center and co-director, with Berhane Asfaw, Yonas Beyene, and Giday WoldeGabriel, of the Middle Awash Research Project.

Time White (born 4 April 1952 in Erith, Kent) is a British painter, best known for his science fiction and fantasy book covers, record covers and magazine illustrations.

White studied at the Medway College of Art between 1968 and 1972. Following this, he spent two years working for various advertising studios, until he received his first book cover commission in 1974, for Arthur C Clarke's The Other Side of the Sky. He has since provided covers for authors including Robert A. Heinlein, Frank Herbert, August Derleth, H. P. Lovecraft, Piers Anthony and Bruce Sterling.

Style

In A Biographical Dictionary of Science Fiction and Fantasy Artists, Robert Weinberg says, 'White combines superlative detail with a largely figurative approach to his work and creates a totally realistic image of his landscape of the imagination.'The Encyclopedia of Science Fiction says, 'White has been celebrated as a representative of a new school of super-realists that began shaping British sf art in the mid-1970s,' but notes that he has been 'relatively inactive since the year 2000'.
