Tight Fit are a British pop group who had a number of hits in the early 1980s, including a UK No.1 (for three weeks) with their cover version of "The Lion Sleeps Tonight" in 1982. The group had two completely different line-ups - the first (a group of session singers) in 1981 and a male/female trio in 1982.

History

In 1981, record producer Ken Gold came up with the idea to record a single made up of a medley of 1960s songs. The medley trend was in full swing at this time, following the success of Starsound and their Stars on 45 singles. He put together a group of male/female session singers and released "Back to the 60s" under the group title, Tight Fit. The song became a hit in the summer and reached No.4 in the UK Singles Chart. Instead of the sessions singers who sang on the record, a group of models were hired to mime to the recording when Tight Fit appeared on the BBC's music show Top of the Pops. A follow-up, "Back to the 60s Part 2" was released soon after and also hit the UK Top 40.

Tight Fit (album)

Tight Fit is a 1982 album by the British pop group Tight Fit.

The album featured the No.1 single "The Lion Sleeps Tonight" as well as the top five hit "Fantasy Island". Tracks "Secret Heart" and "I'm Undecided" were released as singles also, but achieved less success. The album itself peaked at a relatively low No.87. This was Tight Fit's second album, albeit the first with this line-up. Soon after the album's release, two of the members, Julie Harris and Denise Gyngell departed the group and were replaced by two other female singers to re-record (and promote) the "I'm Undecided" single. The album was produced by Talk Talk member Tim Friese-Greene. Tight Fit was one of the first albums released on the fledgling Jive Record label, which from these humble beginning went on to be a major player in the industry for the next 30 years.

In 1986, Samantha Fox recorded the song "Baby I'm Lost for Words" for her debut album (which was released on the same label). The song "Secret Heart" was reworked into "Time Machine", a track on the 1984 Barbra Streisand album Emotion.
