Thái Bình Province

Thái Bình ( listen) is a coastal eastern province in the Red River Delta region of northern Vietnam, named after the Vietnamese name for the Pacific Ocean: Thái Bình Dương. It is about 18 km from Nam Định, 70 km from Haiphong, and 110 km from Hanoi.

Administrative divisions

Thái Bình is subdivided into 8 district-level sub-divisions:

They are further subdivided into 9 commune-level towns (or townlets), 267 communes, and 10 wards.

People and culture

Although situated in the centre of the Red River Delta, in the past, Thái Bình was considered an island bounded by three larger rivers, and is the only province never to have been merged or separated. This position gives the people of Thái Bình a quite distinct culture. Thái Bình is the homeland of hát chèo opera (in Khuốc village, Phong Châu commune, Đông Hưng District) and Water puppetry (in Nguyên Xá commune, Đông Hưng District ). Thái Bình people are noted for their practical and clever character.

Thái Bình

Thái Bình ( listen) is a city in the Red River Delta of northern Vietnam. It is the capital of Thái Bình Province. The town is located 110 km from Hanoi. The city area is 67.7 square km, with a population of 210,000 people (2006).

History

In the 10th century, the area was the domain of the Tran clan, which rose in power to become the Trần Dynasty of Vietnam in the early 13th century. The town Thái Bình (Sino-Vietnamese: 太平) developed near the Keo Pagoda constructed in 1061.

Before the prime minister declared it a city in June 2004, Thai Binh was officially a town. The city is the center of economics and culture in its province. Thai Binh Medical College is considered one of the highest quality medical colleges in Vietnam.
