Thomas Reid

Thomas Reid FRSE (/riːd/; 26 April 1710 – 7 October 1796) was a religiously trained Scottish philosopher, a contemporary of David Hume as well as "Hume's earliest and fiercest critic." He was the founder of the Scottish School of Common Sense and played an integral role in the Scottish Enlightenment. The early part of his life was spent in Aberdeen and he graduated from the University of Aberdeen. He began his career as a Minister of the Church of Scotland but ceased to be a Minister (or called 'Reverend') when he was given a professorship at King's College, Aberdeen in 1752. He obtained his doctorate and wrote An Inquiry Into the Human Mind on the Principles of Common Sense (published in 1764). He and his colleagues founded the 'Aberdeen Philosophical Society' which was popularly known as the 'Wise Club' (a literary-philosophical association). Shortly after the publication of his first book, he was given the prestigious Professorship of Moral Philosophy at the University of Glasgow when he was called to replace Adam Smith. He resigned from this position in 1781, after which he prepared his university lectures for publication in two books: Essays on the Intellectual Powers of Man (1785) and Essays on the Active Powers of the Human Mind (1788). Reid was buried at Blackfriars Church in the grounds of Glasgow College and when the university moved to Gilmorehill in the west of Glasgow, his tombstone was inserted in the main building. Thomas Reid (British politician)

Thomas Reid (26 December 1881 – 28 January 1963) was a British diplomat and politician. He was Labour Member of Parliament (MP) for Swindon from 1945 to 1955.

Thomas Reid (footballer)

Thomas Reid (15 October 1905 – 1972) was a Scottish footballer. He was born in Motherwell, Lanarkshire.

Reid started his career with Liverpool, but, after being loaned out to Oldham Athletic, he transferred to Manchester United in 1929. He would go on to score 67 goals for United before being transferred back to Oldham in 1933. He played the 1934–35 season with Barrow before ending his career with Rhyl

Thomas Reid (naval surgeon)

Thomas Reid (1791–1825), was an Irish born Naval surgeon. He was educated near Dungannon, County Tyrone and around 1811 he entered the Royal Navy. In 1813 he passed the examinations of the Royal College of Surgeons in London, being admitted as a member in November 1815. On the 10 January 1814 he was appointed as a naval surgeon.

In the role as a surgeon superintendent he made two trips on prison ships, one in the convict ship Neptune carrying male prisoners departed 16 December 1817 and arrived on the 5 May 1818 at Sydney and on the Morley which departed London carrying female prisoners on the 22 May 1820 and arrived on the 29 August 1820 at Hobart with further travel to leave prisoners at Sydney.

Reid was a close associate of the prison reformer Elizabeth Fry and it was at the suggestion of Fry that Reid had taken on the role of surgeon superintendent for these journeys. It was to Fry that Reid dedicated his book, Two voyages to New South Wales and Van Diemen's Land.

Thomas Reid (humanist)

Thomas Reid (Read, Rhaedus) (died 1624) was a Scottish humanist and philosopher who became Latin secretary to King James VI and I.

Life

He was second son of James Reid, minister of Banchory Ternan, Kincardineshire, a cadet of the Pitfoddels family. Alexander Reid (doctor) (1586?–1643) the surgeon, was a younger brother. Thomas was educated at the grammar school, Aberdeen, and at Marischal College and University, where he appears to have graduated M.A. about 1600. In 1602 he was appointed to a mastership in the grammar school, which he resigned in the following year on being chosen one of the regents in Marischal College.

After conducting a university class through the four years of their curriculum, he went to the continent, where he continued his studies, at first in France, and afterwards at the universities of Rostock and Leipzig. While at Rostock, where he was admitted a docent in December 1608, he taught philosophy and humanities for several years; and carried out a disputation on metaphysical subjects with Henningus Arnisæus, then professor of medicine in the University of Frankfurt. He matriculated at Leipzig in the summer of 1613.
