Thomas Lang

Thomas Lang ( listen ; born 5 August 1967, Vienna) is an Austrian drummer, multi-instrumentalist, composer and record producer. He is the founding member of the Los Angeles-based progressive/avant garde metal band, stOrk, and is known for his international session work on a wide variety of genres such as rock, pop, jazz, and heavy metal, with artists such as Robert Fripp, Peter Gabriel, Robbie Williams, and Sugababes, among many others.

He is widely known for his technical prowess in drumming. Peter Wildoer described Lang as a "drummer's drummer", and Mike Portnoy cited Lang as a drummer he "can't replicate".

Biography

Lang was born in Vienna. He took up drumming at age five. In addition to lessons at local music schools and years of private tuition, he was classically trained at the Vienna Conservatory of Music. After leaving the conservatory in 1985, Lang began working professionally, working his way through the European pop, rock and jazz scenes. As a session musician he played for artists such as John Wetton, Robert Fripp, Glenn Hughes, Peter Gabriel, Asia, Nik Kershaw, Tina Turner, Robbie Williams, Kelly Clarkson, Sugababes, Geri Halliwell, Emma Bunton, Victoria Beckham, Ronan Keating, Steve Hackett, 911, Boyzone, Falco, Nina Hagen, Steve Jones, Mick Jones, the Commodores, George Michael, Doogie White, B*Witched, Gianna Nannini, Lighthouse Family, Westlife, Kylie Minogue, the Blockheads, Sertab Erener, Vienna Art Orchestra, Bonnie Tyler, Nadine Beiler, and Paul Gilbert. In 1995 Lang released his debut solo project, Mediator, which topped the charts in Europe and garnered positive reviews.

Thomas Lang (cricketer)

Thomas William Lang (2 February 1840 – 26 December 1894) was an English first-class cricketer. He was a right-handed batsman and a roundarm right-arm medium pace bowler who played from 1872 to 1875 for Oxford University Cricket Club and Gloucestershire County Cricket Club. Lang was born at Selkirk, Scotland.

Lang made 18 first-class appearances, scoring 303 runs @ 13.17 with a highest innings of 54, his sole half-century. He held 9 catches and took 76 wickets @ 14.52 with a best analysis of 6–27. He took 10 wickets in a match on one occasion and five wickets in an innings on five occasions.

Lang died at Virginia Water, Surrey on 26 December 1894.

Thomas Lang (Thomas Jones) is a Liverpool based singer-songwriter, best known for the jazz-tinged song "The Happy Man", which spent 3 weeks in the UK top 100 singles chart in January 1988 (peaking at no. 67). He released his debut album, Scallywag Jaz in 1987. His last album release (to date) was Versions in 1996.

Lang toured with his band throughout the late 1980s and early 1990s, and built up a loyal following, as well as appearing with Jools Holland's band on the TV show The Happening in 1990, and several residencies at the world famous London jazz venue, Ronnie Scott's.

Lang still plays live in the UK and occasionally further afield.

He was one of the consortium who successfully battled to save Liverpool's Parr Street Recording Studios (a Grammy Award-winning studio, known for its work with Coldplay, Doves, Embrace, Elbow and Badly Drawn Boy).

On 25 August 2006, Lang duetted with fellow Liverpool singer Jennifer John on the anthemic "You'll Never Walk Alone" at Liverpool's world famous Matthew Street Music Festival.
