Thomas Jefferson

Thomas Jefferson (April 13 [O.S. April 2] 1743 – July 4, 1826) was an American Founding Father who was principal author of the Declaration of Independence (1776). He was elected the second Vice President of the United States (1797–1801) and the third President (1801–09). Jefferson was a proponent of democracy, republicanism, and individual rights, which motivated American colonists to break from Great Britain and form a new nation. He produced formative documents and decisions at both the state and national level.

Primarily of English ancestry, he was born and educated in Virginia. He graduated from the College of William & Mary in Williamsburg and practiced law. During the American Revolution, he represented Virginia in the Continental Congress that adopted the Declaration, drafted the law for religious freedom as a Virginia legislator, and served as a wartime governor (1779–1781). He became the United States Minister to France in May 1785, and subsequently the nation's first Secretary of State in 1790–1793 under President George Washington. Jefferson and James Madison organized the Democratic-Republican Party to oppose the Federalist Party during the formation of the First Party System. In 1796, he was elected vice president. With Madison, he anonymously wrote the Kentucky and Virginia Resolutions in 1798–1799, which sought to embolden states' rights in opposition to the national government by nullifying the Alien and Sedition Acts.

Thomas Jefferson (athlete)

Thomas Theodore Jefferson (born June 8, 1962) is an American former athlete who competed mainly in the 200 meters. He was born in Cleveland, Ohio and attended Kent State University.

He competed for the United States in the 1984 Summer Olympics held in Los Angeles, United States in the 200 metres where he won the bronze medal.

Thomas Jefferson (musician)

Thomas Jefferson (born June 20, 1920, Chicago, Illinois, United States) is an American Dixieland jazz trumpeter, strongly influenced by Louis Armstrong.

Jefferson played drums and French horn while young before switching to trumpet. He played with Papa Celestin's orchestra in 1936, as well as with New Orleans jazz musicians such as Sidney Desvigne and Jump Jackson. In the 1950s, he worked with Johnny St. Cyr, Santo Pecora, and George Lewis. He recorded sparingly as a leader; sessions include an album for Southland Records in 1960 and one for Storyville Records in 1974. Jazz critic Scott Yanow called Jefferson "one of the finest trumpeters in New Orleans during the 1950s and 60s."

Thomas Jefferson University Hospital is a hospital in Center City, Philadelphia, affiliated with Thomas Jefferson University, Jefferson Hospital for Neuroscience and Methodist Hospital (Philadelphia).

History

Formed in 1825 as the Infirmary of the Jefferson Medical College the predecessor of the Hospital of Jefferson Medical College and then Jefferson University Hospitals, TJUH serves patients in Philadelphia, and the surrounding communities in the Delaware Valley including Southern New Jersey and Southeastern Pennsylvania.

Thomas Jefferson University Hospitals has 957 licensed acute care beds. Services are provided at five locations — the main hospital facility and Jefferson Hospital for Neuroscience, both in Center City Philadelphia; Methodist Hospital in South Philadelphia; Jefferson at the Navy Yard, just past the sports complex; and Jefferson-Voorhees in South Jersey.

Formerly a division of Thomas Jefferson University, the Hospital was separated from the University to become a founding member of the Jefferson Health System in 1995. The Hospital merged with Methodist Hospital as a division of Thomas Jefferson University Hospitals in 1996. In March of 2014, the Jefferson Health System was dissolved "in order for (TJUH) to move forward" and "be nimble and agile, but also not be constrained by a corporate relationship that in some respects put some limits on what we could do," according to Stephen K. Klasko, Jefferson's President and Chief Executive of both Thomas Jefferson University and the parent Thomas Jefferson University Hospitals Inc.

Thomas Jefferson University

Thomas Jefferson University is a private health sciences university in Center City, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in the United States. The university consists of six constituent colleges and schools, Sidney Kimmel Medical College, Jefferson College of Biomedical Sciences, Jefferson College of Health Professions, Jefferson College of Nursing, Jefferson College of Pharmacy, and Jefferson College of Population Health. In 2015, the Sidney Kimmel Medical College was ranked U.S. News & World Report as tied for 63rd place among research institutions and tied for 62nd among primary care institutions.

History

During the early 19th century, several attempts to create a second medical school in Philadelphia had been stymied, largely due to the efforts of University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine alumni.In an attempt to circumvent that opposition, a group of Philadelphia physicians led by Dr. George McClellan sent a letter to the trustees of Jefferson College in Canonsburg, Pennsylvania (now Washington & Jefferson College) in 1824, asking the College to establish a medical department in Philadelphia. The trustees agreed, establishing the Medical Department of Jefferson College in Philadelphia in 1825. In response to a second request, the Pennsylvania General Assembly granted an expansion of Jefferson College's charter in 1826, endorsing the creation of the new department and allowing it to grant medical degrees. An additional 10 Jefferson College trustees were appointed to supervise the new facility from Philadelphia, owing to the difficulty of managing a medical department on the other side of the state. Two years later, this second board was granted authority to manage the Medical Department, while the Jefferson College trustees maintained veto power for major decisions.

Teaching hospital

A teaching hospital is a hospital or medical center that provides clinical education and training to future and current health professionals. Teaching hospitals are often affiliated with medical schools and work closely with medical students throughout their period of matriculation, and especially during their clerkship (internship) years. In most cases, teaching hospitals also offer Graduate Medical Education (GME)/ physician residency programs, where medical school graduates train under a supervising (attending) physician to assist with the coordination of care.

In addition to offering medical education to medical students and physician residents, many teaching hospitals also serve as research institutes.

History

Although institutions for caring for the sick are known to have existed much earlier in history, the first teaching hospital, where students were authorized to methodically practice on patients under the supervision of physicians as part of their education, was reportedly the Academy of Gundishapur in the Persian Empire during the Sassanid era.

University Hospital (Augusta, Georgia)

University Hospital is a non-profit 581-bed private hospital located in downtown Augusta, Georgia. Established in 1818, it is the second-oldest hospital in Georgia. Although University Hospital is considered a teaching institution, it does not currently sponsor an academic program resulting in a degree. University Hospital is no longer directly affiliated with the Medical College of Georgia or Georgia Regents University. University Hospital is a fully private hospital receiving no local or state funding.

In addition to its main hospital campus, the University Health System has outpatient medical offices and imaging centers servicing the surrounding 25-county region comprising the CSRA (Georgia and South Carolina). University Health System boasts a wide variety of primary care and specialty physicians such as Endocrinology, Oncology, Neuroscience, Heart and Vascular, Rheumatology and Gastroenterology. One of the newest additions to the health system is a 25-bed medical center located in McDuffie County offers residents medical and health services for people of the surrounding area.
