Thomas Day

Thomas Day (22 June 1748 – 28 September 1789) was a British author and abolitionist. He was well known for the children's book The History of Sandford and Merton (1783–1789) which emphasized Rousseauvian educational ideals.

Life and works

Day was born on 22 June 1748 London, the only child of Thomas and Jane Day. Thomas Day, Sr. died when Day was about a year old, leaving him fatherless but wealthy. Day first attended a school in Stoke Newington, Middlesex, but after a bout with smallpox he removed to Charterhouse School. He subsequently attended Corpus Christi College, Oxford where he became a master debater and developed a close friendship with William Jones, but he did not graduate and left the college in 1767.

Day moved back to his family estate at Barehill, Berkshire. There he met the progressive educator Richard Lovell Edgeworth, from whom he became almost inseparable. Together they resolved to educate Edgeworth's son, Dick, in the style of Jean-Jacques Rousseau's Emile. Edgeworth and the project converted Day to Rousseauism. He declared in 1769 that the two books he would save, were all the world's books to be destroyed, would be the Bible and Emile. He, Edgeworth and Dick even visited Rousseau in France. Because of his connection with Edgeworth, Day was able to join the Lunar Society in Lichfield and meet and converse with Erasmus Darwin as well as Anna Seward.

Thomas Day (Connecticut)

Thomas Day (1777–1855) graduated from Yale College in 1797; studied law at Litchfield Law School; and, from September 1798 to September 1799, was a tutor in Williams College. He was admitted to the bar in December 1799, and began practice in Hartford. In 1809, he was appointed assistant secretary of the state of Connecticut and in 1810 secretary, an office which he retained until 1835.

In May 1815, he became associate judge of the county court of Hartford, acting in this capacity, with the exception of one year, until May 1825, when he was made chief judge of that court, and so continued until June. 1833. He was a judge of the City court of Hartford from 1818–31, and one of the committee to prepare the statutes of 1808, and also of 1821 and 1824. He report, the decisions of the court of errors from 1805 until 1853, which were published in twenty volumes.

He also edited several English law works, amounting all together to forty volumes, in which he introduced notices of American decisions, and also of later English cases. He was an original member of the Connecticut Historical Society, of which he was president from 1839 until his death.

Thomas Day (North Carolina)

Thomas Day (c. 1801 – 1861) was a free black American furniture designer and cabinetmaker in Caswell County, North Carolina. Day's furniture-making business became one of the largest of its kind in North Carolina, employing at one point up to twelve workers, and distributing furniture to wealthier customers throughout the state. Much of Day's furniture was produced for prominent political leaders, the state government, and the University of North Carolina.

Day did not sign any of his furniture, so authorship must be made through attribution. The North Carolina Museum of History has the largest collection of Day's furniture, including the only known piece documented to him.

Birth and early life

Day was born to free black parents in Dinwiddie County, Virginia around 1801. His family moved to Warren County, North Carolina in 1817, to Hillsborough, Orange County in 1821, and then to Caswell County in 1824. Day began his cabinetmaking business in Milton, North Carolina with his brother, John Day, Jr., but his brother had left Caswell County by 1825, leaving the cabinetry business solely to Thomas.
