Thomas Cole

Thomas Cole (February 1, 1801 – February 11, 1848) was an American artist. He is regarded as the founder of the Hudson River School, an American art movement that flourished in the mid-19th century. Cole's Hudson River School, as well as his own work, was known for its realistic and detailed portrayal of American landscape and wilderness, which feature themes of romanticism.

Early life and education

He was born in Bolton, Lancashire, England, in 1801. In 1818 his family emigrated to the United States, settling in Steubenville, Ohio, where Cole learned the rudiments of his profession from a wandering portrait painter named Stein. However, he had little success painting portraits, and his interest shifted to landscape. Moving to Pittsburgh in 1823 and then to Philadelphia in 1824, where he drew from casts at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, he rejoined his parents and sister in New York City early in 1825. In 1826, he helped found the National Academy of Design.

Thomas Cole (died 1571) was an English Protestant churchman, a Marian exile who became archdeacon of Essex.

Life

A native of Lincolnshire, he graduated M.A. at Oxford. He held the mastership of Maidstone School in 1552, but emigrated to Frankfurt on the accession of Queen Mary. There he made the acquaintance of John Knox. He subsequently moved to Geneva.

Having returned to England Cole was presented to the rectory of High Ongar, Essex, in 1559. He was collated to the archdeaconry of Essex in the ensuing year, and subsequently appointed commissary of the archbishop in the archdeaconries of Essex and Colchester. In 1560 he was also installed in the prebend of Rugmere in St. Paul's Cathedral.

Cole was present at the Convocation of 1563 and subscribed the original Thirty-nine Articles and the petition for discipline presented by the lower house. In 1564 he commenced D.D. at Cambridge, and the same year he was presented to the rectory of Stanford Rivers, Essex. He had a reputation for eloquence and also for a tendency towards nonconformity. He died in 1571.

Thomas Cole (died 1681)

Thomas Cole JP DL (1622–1681) was an English politician who sat in the House of Commons in 1656 and 1660.

Cole was the son of Thomas Cole of Liss and his wife Mary Waller, daughter of Thomas Waller of Beaconsfield, Buckinghamshire. He was baptised on 15 January 1622. He entered Grey's Inn in 1641.

Cole was commissioner for execution of ordinances for Hampshire in 1645 and commissioner for assessment for Hampshire from 1647 to 1652. In 1648 he was commissioner for militia for Hampshire and was a JP for Hampshire by 1650. He was commissioner for security for Hampshire from 1655 to 1656. In 1656, Cole was elected Member of Parliament for Hampshire in the Second Protectorate Parliament. He was commissioner for assessment for Hampshire in 1657 and commissioner for militia in 1659 and 1660. In January 1660 he was commissioner for assessment for Hampshire and by April 1660 he was freeman of Portsmouth and Winchester. In April 1660 he was elected MP for Petersfield and Winchester and may not have resolved his preference by the time parliament was dissolved.

Life

Cole was a native of London, born in 1628. His father William Cole owned property, and sent him to Westminster School, from where, in 1646, he was elected student of Christ Church, Oxford. He proceeded B.A. in 1649, and M.A. 8 July 1651, and in 1656 became principal of St. Mary Hall. As a tutor he had pupils including John Locke.

The Restoration of Charles II led to the ejection of Cole from his position at Oxford. He then opened a dissenting academy at Nettlebed, Oxfordshire, where one of those under his charge was James Bonnell. Samuel Wesley attacked the character of Cole, based on reports from Bonnell; Samuel Palmer defended Cole in his Vindication of the Dissenters.

In February 1674 Cole succeeded Philip Nye as minister of the Independent congregation at Silver Street meeting-house, London. He was also one of the ministers of the merchants' lecture at Pinners' Hall. His church, after leaving Silver Street, met at Tallow Chandlers' Hall, Dowgate Hill, and then at Pinners' Hall, where he preached his last sermon 22 August 1697.
