Thomas Bates

Thomas Bates (1567 – 30 January 1606) was a member of the group of provincial English Catholics who planned the failed Gunpowder Plot of 1605.

Bates was born at Lapworth in Warwickshire, and became a retainer to Robert Catesby, who from 1604 planned to kill King James I by blowing up the House of Lords with gunpowder, and inciting a popular revolt during which a Catholic monarch would be restored to the English throne. Bates was invited to join the conspiracy after he accidentally became aware of it. As he rode with Catesby to prepare for the group's planned uprising on 5 November 1605, Guy Fawkes was found guarding the gunpowder stored under the House of Lords and arrested. Bates subsequently accompanied Catesby and his small group of fugitives to Holbeche House in Staffordshire, but left shortly before his master was killed there by government forces on 8 November. He was subsequently captured and taken to London.

Bates was the only member of the group to implicate the Jesuits in the conspiracy, but may have done so only to alleviate his punishment. He retracted his statement when it became clear he was to be executed. Three days after his trial on 27 January 1606, he was hanged, drawn and quartered.

Thomas Bates (surgeon)

Thomas Bates (fl.1704–1719) was an English surgeon in the Royal Navy.

Career

Bates is known from his Enchiridion of Fevers common to Seamen in the Mediterranean, published in London in 1709. He served for five years as a naval surgeon in the Mediterranean, and subsequently he practiced in London.

He also distinguished himself by his efforts during the cattle plague of 1714. This epidemic, which is said to have destroyed a million and a half of cattle in western Europe in 1711–14, had made its appearance in England, where it had been unknown for centuries, and had reached the Islington cowyards.

The energetic measures adopted by the Privy Council on Bates's suggestions proved so effectual that, at a sacrifice of six thousand head of cattle, it was stamped out within three months.s

Royal Society

Bates was elected a fellow of the Royal Society in December 1718, and was admitted into the society 8 January 1719.

Biography

Thomas Bates was descended from a family long settled in Northumberland. He was born at Matfen, Northumberland, on 21 June 1775, the younger of the two sons of George Bates of Aydon Castle and his wife Diana (d. 1822), daughter of Thomas Moore of Bishop's Castle, Shropshire.

Bates was educated at the grammar school at Haydon Bridge, and afterwards at Witton-le-Wear school, where 'he never joined in his schoolfellows' games, but would sit for hours in the churchyard with a book' At the age of fifteen he was called home to assist in the management of his father's farms. Before he was eighteen he became tenant of his father's patrimony at Aydon White House. In 1795 his mother's first cousin, Arthur Blayney of Gregynog, Montgomeryshire, who had always been expected to leave his property to Thomas (his godson), died, bequeathing all his heritage to Lord Tracy, a stranger in blood ; and this was a great disappointment to Bates and his family.
