This Woman's Work

"This Woman's Work" is a song written and performed by the British singer Kate Bush. It was originally featured on the soundtrack of the American film She's Having a Baby (1988). The song was released as the second single from her album The Sensual World in 1989 and peaked at 25 in the UK Singles Chart.

Song information

The lyric of "This Woman's Work" is about being forced to confront an unexpected and frightening crisis during the normal event of childbirth. Written for the movie She's Having a Baby, director John Hughes used the song during the film's dramatic climax, when Jake (Kevin Bacon) learns that the lives of his wife (Elizabeth McGovern) and their unborn child are in danger. As the song plays, we see a montage sequence of flashbacks showing the couple in happier times, intercut with shots of him waiting for news of Elizabeth and their baby's condition. Bush wrote the song specifically for the sequence, writing from a man's (Jake's) viewpoint and matching the words to the visuals which had already been filmed.

This Woman's Work (Defiance)

"This Woman's Work" is the sixth episode of the second season of the American science fiction series Defiance, and the series' eighteenth episode overall. It was aired on July 24, 2014. The episode was written by Brian Allen Alexander and directed by Allan Arkush.

Plot

Viceroy Mercado (William Atherton) returns to Defiance to inform Niles (James Murray) about the coming Arkfall and that he wants him to go with a team, Nolan (Grant Bowler) included, to retrieve an energy source from the Ark. Nolan and Niles get ready to go with the team when Tommy (Dewshane Williams) comes to join them with Berlin (Anna Hopkins). When Nolan asks Tommy where Irisa (Stephanie Leonidas) is, Tommy says that since Irisa and Berlin do not get along, Berlin will come with them while Irisa stays back. Nolan does not like the idea and tells Tommy that he is not going with them either, causing Tommy to quit his job. Berlin convinces Tommy to leave Defiance with her and sign up with the E-Rep in Texas.

This Woman's Work: Anthology 1978–1990

This Woman's Work: Anthology 1978–1990 is a compilation box set by the British singer Kate Bush. Released in 1990 on CD, vinyl and cassette; it comprises her six studio albums to that point together with two additional albums of B-sides, rarities and remixes. The box set was re-released, on CD only, in 1998 in different packaging. It was not released in the US mainly due to The Sensual World being released there by Columbia Records.

The two rarities discs are entitled This Woman's Work: Volume One and This Woman's Work: Volume Two (in the vinyl edition the twenty-nine tracks are spread over three LP's), and have never been released as albums separately from the box set.

Although publicised as a complete collection of Bush's works up to 1990, many tracks released during this time are missing from this collection including the Single Version Remix of "The Man with the Child in His Eyes", the Single Edit remix of "Wow", "Dreamtime" (the instrumental B-side of "The Dreaming" single), "Running Up that Hill (Instrumental Version)", "The Big Sky (Single Version)", "The Sensual World (Instrumental Version)", "The Confrontation" from the "Love and Anger" single and the Single Version Mix of "This Woman's Work".

This Woman (LeAnn Rimes album)

This Woman is the seventh studio album by LeAnn Rimes released on January 25, 2005. While promoting This Woman, she stated that it was her return to her "roots", country music. In essence, the album has a strong theme of love, falling in love and marriage. This could be due to LeAnn's own marriage to her back up dancer Dean Sheremet. The album was a success on the country charts. Like Twisted Angel, Rimes helped pen tracks on the album ("You Take Me Home", "I Got It Bad" and "When This Woman Loves a Man").

Singles from the album include, in order of release, "Nothin' 'bout Love Makes Sense", "Probably Wouldn't Be This Way", "Something's Gotta Give" and "Some People". Respectively, these reached #5, #3, #2, and #36 on the country singles charts.

The album also features the track "I Dare You" which was also recorded by SHeDAISY on their 2004 album, Sweet Right Here.

A bonus thirteenth track, "Afraid to Fall", was released exclusively to US Target stores. It was also included as a bonus track on the Japanese version of the album. Rimes helped pen this track as well.

Women's work

Women's work or woman's work is a term used particularly in the West to indicate work that is believed to be exclusively the domain of women and associates particular tasks with the female gender. It is particularly used with regard to work that a mother or wife will perform within a family and household. (See sexual division of labour.) Related concepts include gender role, wage labour and employment, female workforce, and women's rights (cf. Gender roles and feminism). The term may be pejorative, when applied to men performing roles which are largely designated for women.

The term "women's work" may indicate a role with children as defined by nature in that only women are biologically capable of performing them: pregnancy, childbirth, and breastfeeding. It may also refer to professions that involve these functions: midwife and wet nurse. "Women's work" may also refer to roles in raising children particularly within the home: diaper changing and related hygiene, toilet training, bathing, clothing, feeding, monitoring, and education with regard to personal care. It may also refer to professions that include these functions such as that of: teacher (up to the age of puberty), governess, nanny, day care worker, and au pair. "Women's work" may also refer to roles related to housekeeping such as: cooking, sewing, ironing, and cleaning. It may also refer to professions that include these functions such as: maid and cook. Though much of "women's work" is indoors, some is outdoors such as: fetching water, grocery shopping or food foraging, and gardening.
