Kenneth Vivian Thimann (August 5, 1904 – January 15, 1997) was an English-American plant physiologist and microbiologist known for his studies of plant hormones, which were widely influential in agriculture and horticulture. He isolated and determined the structure of auxin, the first known plant hormone. He spent most of his early career (1935–1965) at Harvard University, and his later career (1965 - ) at the University of California, Santa Cruz.
Thimann was born in Ashford, England. He studied chemistry and biochemistry at Imperial College, University of London (earning a B.Sc. and a Ph.D.) and also received a diploma from the University of Graz. After several years teaching at the University of London, Thimann moved to the California Institute of Technology in 1930. In 1935, he joined the Biology department of Harvard University. He authored an influential book on plant hormones, Phytohormones, in 1937 (co-authored with F. W. Went). Thimann became director of Harvard's Biological Laboratories in 1946, a position he held until 1950. In 1955 he wrote The Life of Bacteria, an influential book on microbiology. From 1962 until leaving Harvard in 1965, Thimann was the Higgins Professor of Biology.
I don't know why I like him, I just only know I do
I don't know why I trust him, I just know his heart is true
I don't know why he's more a man than any man I know
I don't know how I know the man's for real but I still know
The man is more than what meets the eye
He is worn and weary from life
He is rugged but he's got style
The man has got what matters inside
Weary, yes he must get weary but he doesn't say
But you can read between the lines that wind along his face
The man has got his memories that he hides inside his mind
And you can see the sadness in the eyes they hide behind
The man is more than what meets the eye
He is worn and weary from life
He is rugged but he's got style
The man has got what matters inside
Love him, yes I've always loved him and I always will
He holds a place in my heart no one else could ever fill
He's always been my hero, the best friend I've ever had
The man is something special and I'm proud that he's my dad
The man is more than what meets the eye
He is worn and weary from life
He is rugged but he's got style
