The Realm Online

The Realm Online, originally known simply as The Realm, is a second generation MORPG (multiplayer online role playing game).

The Realm was launched in December 1996 for Windows PC It was designed in the tradition of graphical MUDs, before the popular usage of the terms "massively multiplayer" and "MMORPG".

Originally published by Sierra On-Line, it was abandoned by that company because of its unfavorable comparison to Ultima Online and EverQuest. It was next taken up for a short time by a company called World Opponent Network which was also owned by Sierra On-line, then Codemasters, and presently is a Norseman Games production.

Gameplay

The Realm Online uses turn-based combat, which makes it different from other MUDs of its generation, and is convenient for players with a bad Internet connection. it has been credited to be the first virtual world to use instances, with every battle taking place in a special room outside of the open world.

The game has been criticized for its unforgiving character creation: a character that hasn't been created optimally can't reach maximum potential.

The Realm

The Realm is a southern California surfing products and clothing company co-founded in 1997 by noted surfers Mike Parsons and Pat O'Connell. It has sponsored pro surfers such as Tom Curren. The brand's ownership has changed twice since 1999 and is now is owned by Realm Holdings, LLC. www.realmnation.com

Between 2001 and 2006 The Realm brand name was licensed in the US to Anaheim, California-based Motiv Sports, best known for its pricepoint bicycles found in big-box stores like Target. The brand was also carried on molded surfboards from China at discount retailers such as Costco. Realm products can easily be found in sporting goods retailers, like Big 5 Sporting Goods. Products include, rash guards, boardshorts, Hoodies, T-shirts, sunglasses, beach cruiser bicycles and flipflops.

The Realm is known as a true Southern California Surf brand made "for surfers by surfers" and has used the tagline Three Oceans - One Realm since inception.

The Realm has licensees and distributors in North America, Europe, Japan, Slovenia, United Kingdom, and China.
