The Flats

The Flats is a mixed-use industrial, entertainment, and increasingly residential area of Cleveland, Ohio, USA. The name reflects its low-lying topography on the banks of the Cuyahoga River.

History

In 1796, Moses Cleaveland and his survey party landed on the banks of the Cuyahoga upon their arrival from Connecticut. Early settlers included Lorenzo Carter, whose land holdings included much of what makes up today's East Bank entertainment district, including Whiskey Island, which was created when the mouth of the river was straightened by the Corps of Engineers. A log cabin on Merwin Road near Center Street on the East Bank is a recreation of Carter's house, which was further upstream.

Early residents found the Flats inhospitable, with humid summers that brought airborne illness and harsh winters with strong winds and snowfall off Lake Erie. Many took to higher ground in current-day Downtown. These settlers often relied on local Native American residents who lived on the West Bank and were more adept at living in the area.

The Flats (Woodbridge)

The Flats is a neighborhood located in the southeastern end of Woodbridge, Connecticut, in the valley Amity area that runs between the hilly western part of town and the rock formation known as West Rock. It also borders the city of New Haven, and specifically the neighborhood of Westville. The valley of Amity is an area located partly in the town of Woodbridge, Connecticut and partly in the city of New Haven. It is bounded on the northeast by the West Rock ridge, on the south by the Westville neighborhood of New Haven, and on the northwest by an incline in elevation above which lies the highlands of Woodbridge, Connecticut.

The Amity Flats is Woodbridge's main commercial section, with mixed-use residential, recreational and retail zoning. CT Route 63 and CT Route 69 are the primary roads in this neighborhood, which form major north-south arterials between New Haven and northern towns like Bethany and the Naugatuck River Valley region beyond. CT Route 15/The Wilbur Cross Parkway runs east-west through The Flats to intersect with CT-63 and CT-69. The planned over 55 community of Woodbridge Village will be located on Bradley Road which runs between Amity Road and Litchfield Turnpike. Construction of 245 Amity Road Plaza was a first step in the redevelopment of the area. The area is also known as The West River Valley and the Village of Woodbridge.

The Flats (film)

The Flats is a 2002 independent film written and directed by brothers Tyler Requa and Kelly Requa. Filmed in October 2001 near Mt. Vernon and the Skagit Valley of Washington, The Flats was produced by Clear Pictures, LLC and premiered at the 2002 Seattle International Film Festival.

Plot summary

The Flats tells a cautionary tale of friendship and desire played out among a group of 20-somethings transitioning into adulthood. Main character Harper and his buddies make the most of their freedom prior to an impending court-ordered jail sentence. Things get even more serious when Harper and his best friend's girlfriend, Paige, begin a sobering relationship.
