The White Stripes

The White Stripes were an American rock duo, formed in 1997 in Detroit, Michigan. The group consisted of the couple, married at the time, Jack White (songwriter, vocals, guitar, bass and keyboards) and Meg White (drums and occasional vocals). After releasing several singles and three albums within the Detroit music scene, The White Stripes rose to prominence in 2002, as part of the garage rock revival scene. Their successful and critically acclaimed albums White Blood Cells and Elephant drew attention from a large variety of media outlets in the United States and the United Kingdom, with the single "Seven Nation Army" and its now-iconic guitar line becoming a huge hit. The band recorded two more albums, Get Behind Me Satan in 2005 and Icky Thump in 2007, and dissolved in 2011 after a lengthy hiatus from performing and recording.

The White Stripes used a low-fidelity approach to writing and recording. Their music featured a melding of garage rock and blues influences and a raw simplicity of composition, arrangement, and performance. The duo was also noted for their fashion and design aesthetic which featured a simple color scheme of red, white, and black—which was used on every album and single cover the band released—as well as the band's fascination with the number three. The band's discography consists of six studio albums, one live album, two extended plays (EP), one concert film, one tour documentary, twenty-six singles, and fourteen music videos. Their last three albums each won the Grammy Award for Best Alternative Music Album.

The White Stripes (album)

The White Stripes is the debut studio album by American alternative rock duo The White Stripes, released on June 15, 1999. The album was produced by Jim Diamond and vocalist/guitarist Jack White, recorded in January 1999 at Ghetto Recorders and Third Man Studios in Detroit. White dedicated the album to deceased blues musician Son House.

Recording and production

Johnny Walker of the Soledad Brothers played slide guitar on two songs: "Suzy Lee" and "I Fought Piranhas". Walker is credited with having taught Jack White how to play slide, a technique featured heavily on the White Stripes' first two albums. Walker explains, "[Jack] had a four track in his living room and invited me to come by and do some recording. In return, I showed him how to play slide."

The duo covered "St. James Infirmary Blues" after, according to Jack, he and Meg were introduced to the song from a Betty Boop cartoon.

Critical reception

The album received mostly positive reviews. Norene Cashen of The Metro Times said the LP "serves better to remind us that [Detroit's] local identity has more options than a membership card to the latest cliché...or a one-way ticket to the coast."

Rag And Bone

by: The White Stripes

[Jack & Meg:]
Rag & Bone!
Rag & Bone!
Rag & Bone!
Rag & Bone!
[Jack:]
Meg, look at this place
This place looks like a mansion!
It's like a mansion, look at all this stuff!
Look, I see something over there.
We got you here selling rag and bone
Bring out your junk and we'll give it a home
A broken trumpet or a telephone
Ah, come on, come on, come on
Come and give it to me
Yeah!
Come on, come on, come on
Come on and give it to me
Rag & Bone!
Rag & B one!
Ah, come on, come on, come on
Come on and give it to me
Oh looking pretty
Your pretty little Rags & Bones
[Jack:] Well, look at all this, you don't want it?
[Meg:] What is that?
[Jack:]
You sure you don't want it? Take it.
They're just things you don't want.
I can use 'em.
Meg can use 'em
We can do something with 'em
We'll make something out of 'em
Make some money out of 'em at least.
Hey if you ain't gonna use it, just give it to us
We'll give it a home
Well, I hope you got something shoddy for me
Everybody got a Christmas tree
I got you a pot with a toilet seat
Ah, jump up, jump up, jump up
Come on and give it to me
Rag & Bone!
We wanna get it Granny, while it's hot
You think it's trash Granny, but it's not
Oh, we'll be taking whatever you got
Ah, give up, give up, give up
Come on and give it to me
Woo!
Oh looking pretty
Your pretty little Rags & Bones
[Meg:] I saw some stuff in here, now are you gonna give it to us?
[Jack:] Ah, Meg, don't be rude
[Meg:] Why not?
[Jack:]
They might need it.
And if you don't want it, we'll take it
And if you don't wanna give it to us,
We'll keep walking by
We'll keep going we're not tired
But, got plenty of places to go
Lots of homes we ain't been to yet
The west side
The south-west side
Middle east
Rich house
Dog house
Outhouse
Old folks' house
House for unwed mothers
Halfway homes
Catacombs
Twilight Zones
Looking for techniques, turntables to gramophones
So take a last lick of your ice-cream cones
And lock up what you still wanna own
But please be kind
And don't rewind
Oh looking pretty
Your pretty little Rags & Bones
Your pretty little Rags & Bones
Ah, jump up, jump up, jump up
Come on and give it to me
Your pretty little Rags & Bones
[Jack & Meg:]
Ah, come on, come on, come on
Come on and give it to us!
[Jack:]
Yeah!
Yeah, yeah!
Oh yeah!
Yeah!
[Meg:] Yeah!
[Jack & Meg, x13:] Yeah!
