The Tramp (song)

"The Tramp" (1913) is – together with "The Preacher and the Slave" – one of labor organizer Joe Hill's most well-known songs. The lyrics tell about an able-bodied but unemployed man who wanders around looking for work, but is not welcome anywhere – even in church, Heaven, and Hell – and thus must "keep on a-tramping".

The tune is borrowed from the song "Tramp! Tramp! Tramp!", a Civil War song written in the 1860s by military songwriter George F. Root. Root wrote it for Union soldiers, but the song was so popular that Confederate soldiers wrote their own words, and both sides sang it while marching. That song has appeared in several movies, including Gone with the Wind, and the tune is well-known today as the melody of the Sunday School standard "Jesus Loves the Little Children".

"The Tramp" was first published in the Mar 6, 1913 edition (fifth edition) of the Little Red Songbook of the Industrial Workers of the World (also known as the Wobblies). The Wobblies used songs – parodies set to traditional melodies – to help unionize workers. Hill wrote more than 25 such songs and was considered one of the Wobblies' best lyricists.

The Tramp (film)

The Tramp is Charlie Chaplin's sixth film for Essanay Studios and was released in 1915. Directed by Chaplin, it was the fifth and last film made at Essanay's Niles, California studio.The Tramp marked the beginning of The Tramp character most known today, even though Chaplin played the character in earlier films. This film marked the first departure from his more slapstick character in the earlier films, with a sad ending and showing he cared for others, rather than just himself. The film co-stars Edna Purviance as the farmer's daughter and Ernest Van Pelt as Edna's father. The outdoor scenes were filmed on location near Niles.

Plot

The Tramp (Charlie Chaplin) finds the girl of his dreams and works on a family farm. He helps defend the farm against criminals, and all seems well, until he discovers the girl of his dreams already has a boyfriend. Unwilling to be a problem in their lives, he takes to the road, though he is seen skipping and swinging his cane as if happy to be back on the road where he knows he belongs.

Chris Jones (wide receiver, born 1982)

Christopher Jones (born July 17, 1982) is a former American football wide receiver. He was originally an undrafted free agent signed by the Minnesota Vikings after the 2005 NFL Draft. He was on the Seahawks' roster in 2006, but did not see any playing time. He was released by the Seahawks on August 28, 2007.

He signed a contract with the Saskatchewan Roughriders on September 24, 2008 and was placed on their Developmental Squad.

Jones graduated from Jackson State University in Jackson, Mississippi, where he was an outstanding wide receiver for the Tigers. While at Jackson State, Jones qualified for the Olympic fencing team, but did not participate due to his commitments to Tiger football.

Christopher Martin Nigel "Chris" Jones (born 19 November 1945 in Altrincham, Cheshire, England) is an English former footballer.

Career

Jones started his professional career with Manchester City in May 1964. Though he played regularly in the reserves, finishing top scorer for three seasons running, he did not make his league debut until December 1966, when he deputised for Mike Summerbee in a match against Nottingham Forest. A week later he scored his first senior goal, against West Bromwich Albion. The following season he made two appearances in Manchester City's 1967–68 League Championship winning side, though his contribution was insufficient to gain a winners' medal. He later had a career with York City scoring 33 goals in 95 games.

Despite shake ups to Radio York's York City commentary team for the 2014/5 season, he retains his long running role as match summariser.
