The Stairs were an English rock band formed in Liverpool around 1990 by vocalist and bassist Edgar "Summertyme" Jones, guitarist Ged Lynn and drummer Paul Maguire.
The band released one album and a handful of singles, prior to Lynn's departure in 1993 and their eventual split the following year.
Following a stint as bassist with Echo & The Bunnymen frontman Ian McCulloch, Edgar Jones set about forming a Nuggets/Pebbles style band, influenced by the likes of The 13th Floor Elevators, The Seeds, The Chocolate Watch Band as well as The Beatles and The Rolling Stones. Initially set to release their debut EP Weed Bus on local independent label Imaginary Records (for which a handful of white labels with unique picture sleeves were pressed up), the band ended up signing to Go! Discs, home to The La's and Paul Weller with whom they would issue cult album Mexican R'n'B (1992) along with 3 EPs, all recorded in mono as a nod to their garage rock influenced sound. The band's manager Jason Otty, although not a proper member of the band, would often play harmonica and appear in press shots.
"The Stairs" is the fifth single by INXS taken from their album X. It was only ever released in The Netherlands to coincide with the release of the Live Baby Live album and as such is an extremely rare and valuable collectors item. The song was written by Andrew Farriss and Michael Hutchence as part of the sessions for the X album in 1990.
Michael Hutchence explained in an interview with Newsday in February 1991, that "'The Stairs' is the most ambitious song I've ever written". The tune is about singular city life: "Building to building / street to street ...".
An extended version of the song was used by CBS-TV over the closing credits at the end of their broadcast coverage of the 1994 Winter Olympics.
A re-recorded version with current lead singer of the band J.D. Fortune was released on the 2010 album Original Sin
The B-sides are the studio version of "The Stairs" from the X album and "The One Thing (Live)", also taken from the Live Baby Live album.

The Stairs may also refer to:
She looks at the clock it's a quarter past nine
She hears his car as he pulls in the drive
Dinner's still waiting from hours before
She knows he's been drinking when he walks through the door
In anger he strikes out and she starts to cry
How much more can she take how much more can she lie
And she fell down the stair again but it hasn't happened since she don't know when
Was it in spring when she packed up the kids
Or maybe in winter with his job on the skids
Oh but just like before she'll have to pretend that she fell down the stairs again
A short time ago she started a job serving chicken fried steak and corn on the cob
She started out shy but she ended up sure
That a ticket to anywhere could be the cure
But he couldn't handle her change for the better
She tried to leave him but he wouldn't let her
He says he's sorry he'd never mean it he swears it won't happen again
But she's so confused she wants to believe it she just wants this nightmare to end
And she fell down the stair again...
Just like before she'll have to pretend that she fell down the stairs again
