The Space Between

"The Space Between" is a song written by the Dave Matthews Band. It was released on their 2001 album, Everyday. It was the album's first hit single and the band's first top 40 hit, with its peak at #22 in the United States - several of their previous singles had been ineligible to chart on the Billboard Hot 100 due to a chart quirk. It is also featured on the Dave Matthews Band compilation album The Best of What's Around Vol. 1. It was played for the first time in 1,446 days at Leroi Moore's final concert, on June 28, 2008 and has been played live 115 times.

Music video

The music video, directed by Dave Meyers, was filmed on a pond surrounded by CGI factories and power plants near Orlando, Florida. The video starts out with Dave Matthews playing an acoustic guitar on a cloudy day on the dock of the pond. Right before the first chorus, an old man in a boat appears, as well as the rest of the band on the dock. The old man appears throughout the rest of the video.

Following the first chorus, a boy and girl sitting in the back of an old pickup truck (in the water) appear. The two appear to be dating, or in love. Also, a young woman in the water, played by actress Jaime Pressly, appears holding her baby. After the verse "We're strange allies with warring hearts, what a wild-eyed beast you be," the song enters the rising action stage. Things become a bit more intense, and the music becomes a faster more upbeat rhythm. Also, dancers in the waters appear.

Plot summary

Montine McLeod (Melissa Leo) is a flight attendant who gets stuck with Omar Hassan (Anthony Keyvan) after their flight gets grounded in Longview, Texas, the morning of 11 September 2001.  Omar is an unaccompanied minor; in the chaos that ensues, Montine becomes his temporary guardian.  Montine later discovers that Omar's father works in the World Trade Center.  She decides to drive the boy home after he informs her his father is at home waiting for him in New York.  On the journey, they begin to bond and learn more about each other.  Montine makes a stop on the way to New York as she receives a call that her mother is dying.  Upon arriving at her mother's house, she finds her mother already dead.  After dealing with her mother's death, she continues on the road to take Omar home.  When they get there, they learn Omar's father has not been home in the two days since the destruction of the Twin Towers.  Later that night, Montine receives a call from her employer and is forced to bring Omar with her.  At the ensuing meeting, Montine is terminated; Omar is taken from her and given to his school head master for the night before leaving for a new school the following day (the reason he was on the original flight).  The day Omar is set to leave for Los Angeles, he locks himself in the bathroom and refuses to come out.  Montine is asked to come; she coaxes Omar out of the bathroom and she walks him to his flight to Los Angeles.

    The Space Between

    by: Valencia

There's something strange going on in my head
That says if I were to get in a car right now
North Carolina is where I would end
And to your doorstep I would be bound.
To whisper the words that I've always wanted to say,
And watch as the sun rips this blue sky away
Cause the colors are always changing
So stare up at the clouds
    And at least you know
    you're always looking up
So Casey can you remember (Do you remember)
    sitting by my side
On the bank of the Delaware River
    and talking about life
Don't forget about the blue skies, sunrise, and all the space between
It's amazing how a girl like you could affect a guy like me
All the pictures, memories and all the times we had
Do you think that some things are better left unsaid?
We'd stay inside just to watch the time go by
and sleep the whole day till the night
    with everything you said
I'm sure you've got some place that you'd probably rather be
I hope you're singing this song
    and thinking about me
    Carolina was waiting for you
    it's what you always wanted
Don't forget about the blue skies, sunrise, and all the space between
It's amazing how a girl like you could affect a guy like me
And all the pictures, memories and all the times we had
Do you think that some things are better left unsaid?
    And we run away
Cause the sky looks different when you're in another state
    It's everything I've always wanted
And everything I've worked so hard for
    Well Is it in me
    To put the bottle down?
    well Is it in me?
    to put the bottle down?
well is it in me? (blue skies sunrise and all the space between)
to put the bottle down? ( its amazing how a girl like you could affect a guy like me)
well is it in me?( the pictures, memories, and all the times we had)
to put the bottle down? (do you think that some things, are better left unsaid?)
    Is it in me
