The Sagamore (Brookline High School)
The Sagamore is Brookline High School's student-run monthly newspaper. It is "an independent, school-affiliated publication produced monthly by the students of Brookline High School," according to the paper's [thesagonline.com website]. Each issue consists of five sections: NEWS, OPINIONS, CENTERSPREAD, ARTS, and SPORTS. Issues are distributed free of charge in and around Brookline High School on "distribution days", when the issues are released, and are also available all month in front of the Sagamore room and in the Brookline High School library. Copies of each issue are also sent to the homes of subscribers. Subscriptions can be purchased from members of the Sagamore staff for $20.
Staff
Staff members take the Journalism I and Journalism II classes, taught by Sagamore advisers Lindsay Wise and Marcella Anderson. Depending on how long a member has served on the staff, different positions are available to them. In a student's first year on the staff, they are restricted to a basic journalist position as a staff writer, conducting interviews and writing articles as they learn the essence of journalistic ethics, procedures, and skills in the accompanying Journalism I class. In a student's second year, leadership positions such as section writing or section layout editors, along with the photo and business teams, are assigned by the advisers in addition to the responsibilities of the first year, but the Journalism II class includes more production time. Third-year students, in the Journalism II class along with second-year students, are assigned to a different set of jobs, including the position of Editor-in-Chief (EIC), which is shared between two or three students who are selected by the advisers via an application process.
