The Record Guide

The Record Guide was an English reference work, listing, describing and evaluating gramophone recordings of classical music in the 1950s. It was the precursor of modern guides such as The Penguin Guide to Recorded Classical Music.

Publication history

The guide was conceived and written by Edward Sackville-West and the music critic Desmond Shawe-Taylor. Their aim, as set out in the preface to the first edition in 1951, was "to try to supply a guide-book to the vast available repertory of the gramophone". The book ran to 763 pages, but nevertheless confined its coverage to records available in Britain in the domestic catalogues up to and including December, 1950. A reviewer wrote of the first edition: "It is not an encyclopaedia … for the principle of it is selective rather than comprehensive. We cannot, therefore, fairly charge the authors with omissions other than those which are inadvertent. The point is made with subtlety in the introduction. 'Inadvertent omissions there are bound to be, in spite of every effort to avoid them but it should not be assumed by the reader that an unquoted record has been simply overlooked. It is much more likely to have been excluded deliberately.'"

The Record (Bergen County)

The Record (colloquially called The Bergen Record or The Record of Hackensack) is a newspaper in northern New Jersey, United States. It primarily serves Bergen County, though it also covers Hudson, Essex and Passaic counties as well. It has the second largest circulation of New Jersey's daily newspapers, behind The Star-Ledger. Founded in 1895 and owned by the Borg family since 1930, it is the flagship publication of the North Jersey Media Group. Stephen A. Borg is the publisher of The Record. The paper is edited by Martin Gottlieb.

For years, The Record had its primary offices in Hackensack with a bureau in Wayne. Following the purchase of the competing Herald News of Passaic, both papers began centralizing operations in what is now Woodland Park, where The Record is currently located.

History

In 1930 John Borg, a Wall Street financier, bought The Record.

From 1952 to 1963 the circulation of The Record doubled and its coverage changed from local to regional. It was one of the papers whose editorial position was in favor of the Metropolitan Regional Council (MRC)

The Record (Stockton)

The Record is a daily newspaper based in Stockton, California, serving San Joaquin and Calaveras Counties. It is owned by Local Media Group.

History

The Record was founded in 1895 by Irving Martin as the Evening Record. It is a newspaper that covers stories in the Stockton, San Joaquin and the Mother Lode areas; as well as surrounding areas and a national level as well. In 1969, Speidel Newspapers, Inc. bought The Record and the newspaper introduced its Sunday edition. In March 1977, Gannett Company bought Speidel Newspapers, including The Record. In 1994, Omaha World-Herald Company bought The Record. On May 5, 2003, Ottaway Community Newspapers bought The Record for $144 Million. Ottaway was the Local Media Group for Dow Jones and Co. Subsequently the corporate group changed its name to Dow Jones Local Media Group. The Record is headed by Roger W. Coover, President & Publisher since 1997.

In 2006, The Record began expanding its presence on the Internet as part of a strong digital media initiative. In 2007, The Record changed its brand to San Joaquin Media Group in reflection to the diversification of the information products and services offered in the market.
