The Public Theater is a New York City arts organization founded as The Shakespeare Workshop in 1954 by Joseph Papp, with the intention of showcasing the works of up-and-coming playwrights and performers. At Papp's death in 1991, the Public Theater was renamed the "Joseph Papp Public Theater" in his memory. It is headquartered at 425 Lafayette Street in the former Astor Library in the East Village section of Lower Manhattan.
The venue opened in 1967, mounting the world-premiere production of the musical HAIR as its first show. It is led by Artistic Director Oskar Eustis and Executive Director Patrick Willingham.
The Public is dedicated to embracing the complexities of contemporary society and nurturing both artists and audiences, as it continues Joseph Papp's legacy of creating a place of inclusion and a forum for ideas.
In addition to five theater venues – the Shiva, the Martinson, the LuEsther Hall, the Anspacher and the Newman – the site is home to Joe's Pub, a cabaret-style setting used for new work, musical performances, spoken-word artists and soloists.
The Public is the people and society of a nation or community, or the whole of humanity.

The Public was a rock band that was formed in Central Illinois in 1996 by Zach Crothers, Todd Miller, Bill Keller and Dan Wendt. The band explored rural Southern Illinois, playing in open spaces and farm land before hitting the college bars and party scenes in Carbondale and Bloomington. The Public's music was inspired by numerous classic rock and punk bands as well as more recent bands such as Soundgarden, Fugazi and Helmet. The Public disbanded in the spring of 2001. "The Public" later spawned the bands "Galactic Armageddon" 2002, "The Chompies" 2006, "LDA" 2007 featuring bassist William (Bill) Phat Phinger Keller. William later moved to Germany and changed his name to Vilhelm. Dan Wendt, sometimes known as Coach Hands or Danny Hands, later played in the experimental post-punk band Lights Out Gang and currently drums in Chicago with several bands including Sawbuck, The Congregation and Cakewalk Champion.
The Public is an alternative newsweekly published Wednesdays in Buffalo, New York, United States. It focuses on Buffalo-area art, culture, and politics. The Public was founded in 2014 when several of the writers and editors of fellow weekly paper, Artvoice left following concerns about that papers finances and internal conflicts. The former Artvoice contributors were joined by several new contributors. The Public features locally-created art on its covers and in weekly centerfolds. In addition to the print version, all of The Public's content is available at their website, www.DailyPublic.com. The website also includes web-exclusive content such as blogs and podcasts.

It's another world here
The streets are gleaming
I was even dreaming
That they're paved with gold
Seventeen, at half past ten
All the crowds are surging past
An electric display
There's another world here
Below shop windows
Upon the pavement
Where you wave goodbye
Boys and girls
Come too roost
>From Northern parts
And Scottish towns
Will we catch your eye?
While you pretend not to notice
All the years we've been here
We're the bums you step over
As you leave the Theatre

I was only wishing
For a bit of cash
>From a patron of the arts
Or at least the phantom of the opera
Will I catch your eye?
